UK 300ZX TT upgrade advice wanted

Hi guys,

pretty new to ZX 'clubs'... I've had a 300ZX for about 18 months and it's starting to feel a bit 'slow'. Want to upgrade bits but I have no idea who to go to, or what budget to expect, etc.

Car is UK stock TT, 93L, 40k miles, targa top, 2+2, 2 door. I'm expecting to look at brakes (already getting quite a bit of fade) and suspension, then engine intake & exhaust, then tuning (obviously not all at once!). Is there anything else I need to think about? Where do I start?

Cheers,

James.

Start with the basics.

Exhaust first, not too much of a difference at first but a stock exhaust will hinder any later mods on the car.

Cone aire filter. Most people go with Blitz. K&N wont fit a UK car. Again not too much of a difference. You can feel it but it aint gonna take 0.5 of your 0-60 time.

After that, De-Catted Down pipes. I think that these mods shuld take the car to about 330-350 I think. That is a guess.

ECU, this will change the fuel flow and boost of the car and all these mods I THINK, not sure, will take you to about 380. I THINK. Other people will know better.

After that you are talking loads of money.

Exhaust and air intake do not cost that much, and will give you noticable change. These mods will cause less damage to your engine. In fact should make the engine run better.

De-Catted down pipes, do make quite a difference. People say that the turbo spool up quicker and the engine breaths better. How ever this mod is know to speed up the wear on the turbo seals.

ECU change, is where if your engine is not in good nick where the real expencive damage will come from. Your turbo will be pushed to the limit, 14psi-15psi. At the moment the turbos work at roughly 9psi and the 5-6psi incrase will make a huge difference.

After that I have very little knowledge.

Brakes. Most people go for a Skyline brake set. But you have to have 17" alloys on for them to fit. We did have a group buy on Brembo discs and, I think green stuff pads.

I dont think I read any result of these brakes. I presume they where better, but I dont know how much.

Aaron is good at this stuff

Thanks for this.

Do you have any recommendations of people to do the work? I can travel to most parts of the country (regularly travel between London and Manchester).

Is any of this worth learning how to do myself (I've got basic mechanical knowledge but virtually no experience of working in cars and only a driveway to work in)?

Anyone else have any other suggestions for the brakes? I don't really want to make the car any quicker without sorting them out.

Cheers,

James.

If you hold the mouse over the Z a menu will come up, under links and contact there are a few people who can get some stuff for you.

Grasshopper is where poeple usually goto.

He is based in Leigh, near Wigan.

If you go to Manchester from London up the M6 then across the East Lancs, (long dual carrage way from Haydock Jucntion all the way into Manchester.) then you pass where it is.

Simple...

Contact Johnny for air intake and exhaust(or at least de-cat it)and e mail ChrisC about a chip. Then fit boost jets to raise the boost to 14/15 psi and you have a huge increase over stock biggrin.gif

Then come to one of our next meets and test it all out by doing monster do-nuts in Johnnys street

Also check the Stillen catalogue. Its the only thing I've seen so far that gives you the proper order to do mods in for max benefit and the bhp you get for each one - gives all the ifs buts and maybes about the engine being sound etc etc. But the easy mods are intake, exhaust then JWT chip for apparently 100 extra bhp in total. Probably other UK tuners have other ideas so best to listen what works here from those that tried it.

Anyway from Stillen cat 99

Stg1 20 @ 10psi Stillen intake

Stg2 23 @ 10.5psi Stillen exhaust

Stg3 60 @ 13psi computer chip

Stg4 10 Underdrive pulley

Stg5 4 ignition upgrade

Stg6 10 Ally flywheel

Stg7 10 Stillen intercoolers

Stg8 15 @ 14psi Boost controller

Stg9 15 Decat pipes

Stg10 15 Twin Hi flow air filter +555cc injectors

Stg11- various turbo upgrades up to plus 200 @ 17psi

As you can see from this the law of diminishing returns comes in quick after stage 3 but as some owners here would testify some very big bhp is possible. Depends how deep your pockets are.
