i am rebuilding the zed (trying too) and i keep finding more and more rot. the rear box section behind the corner of the bumper is totaly rottern. i have removed the filler cap cus i am going to weld it up, then i will put an alloy tank in the boot. but the rust, i am going have to do my best and make new panels. also i have the other side to do and the sills and a bit on the floor. apart from that it ok. is it worth doing all of this work???????? i only payed 450 for the car. its a uk spec manual and full leather good for the money. i could save my pennys and buy a gooden but i dont know what i am buying. but atleast the work will be dun on my car. its just costin me time. what do u think????????

All down to the time effort and prep work you are prepared to put in, Really for an as near mint as possible, zed yuor looking at £3.5k+ you can pick up good ones with minimal probs for around 2k. If you were gonna change though id go Jap as you will find that the body work should be in much better conditions as they havent been subjected to our salted roads for best part of 20 years.

Good luck on whatever you decide fella.

I`d do it. Mine went in the same places, even the filler neck was rotten.

If it`s only your time what have you got to lose?

You can actually buy the the bumper corners n weld them in.

My corners rotted because the car had a leak from a light cluster that previous owners hadn`t spotted and water just sat in there, also, where it used to be parked turned into a corrosive mud bath come winter time.

My offside sill rotted, again, because the seam sealant had been badly applied under the door believe or not, and right above the gap, was one of the drainage holes for the door.

All sorted sealed and treated,no more rust.

Highly recommend Bilt Hamber products to treat the metal.

my filler neck has rottern aswell mate. i have cut all of the rot out i was going try and make the sections but if they r cheap i will just buy some.

The section behind the bumper is tricky to fix but not too bad and with some care the bumper does not even need to be removed, here is what it looks like after it is repaired

The sill sections are similar in been tricky but with time and care can be fixed by fabricating repair section to keep the cost down and look like this.

Good luck with the work and in answer to your question it is well worth doing

Mmm....yes thats nasty but when repairing that particular area it is not really neccessary for it to be exactly the same as original, fabricating a strong repair is the most important, replacing the petrol filler pipe is easy and best to use one from an import zed.

as with all welding jobs they all look a bit scary to start with . once you get the first piece in place it will soon come together . my tip to you is get some card board and make up some good templates . when you have done this get your tin snips out and start cutting . before starting to weld pop a couple of rivets through your repair panel to keep it spot on position and then tak on . good luck

i am not putting the filler pipe back on. i am welding it all up.

Be super careful welding anywhere near to an open fuel tank, especially an near empty one, even more dangerous than a full one!.

Oh I see.... thats sounds an interesting idea, do remember to use a tank with a swirl catcher and returns for the fuel lines oh and carbon canister vents if you wish to continue using that.

well i thought i would be different and i have removed the aerial and the filler flap then welded them both up. to give it a clean look. oh ya and the side indicators on the wings too. hope it looks good at the finish

Christ on a bike! mine was never that bad..not sure you can get the panels to cover that large an area.

Ask mjp on here. Also check out courtesy nissan in the states, they`re pretty good for just seeing what`s available panel wise.

As for sill panels i used a guy from ebay called littlebird.

I used a filler neck from an import ala Jeffs suggestion.
