My slow Z...

Hello all,

My Z is down on power and I was wondering if anyone could help.

I have timed the car from 0-100mph using a stopwatch and it took 21seconds! (it's a 1992 UK T.T auto).

I have checked the coil pack connectors, replaced the temperature sensor and run an ECU diagnostic which showed up an all clear.

The car is idling and running fine other than that.

Please someone help, I'm going off my nut!

Thanks for any help,

Brian

what's the max boost you get ?

does it seem the gearbox is slipping or shifting too late/early ?

Thanks for the help so far guys,

The gearbox is a little funny on occasion in that it does'nt kick down when on W.O.T., it sometimes stays in the gear that it's in and just pulls away, but other times it works fine, and when it does, the car is still slow and missing that push you into the seat shove that it once had.

I don't think the car is in safety boost, as the boost guage is flying up to the usual 9.5psi and the ECU diagnostic is showing all clear.

Any ideas what else it could be?

Thanks,

Brian

Unless you have a "Banana in the Tailpipe"

It's sounding more and more like the Autobox - I would get her looked at and be prepared from some $$pensive news mate.

If that checks out get a compression test down and check for excessive smoke from the exhaust and big ass holes in the cylinder block.

But my gearbox is only 2 years old!

the behaviour of your gearbox sounds quite normal (as you describe it), so I don't think that's it..

Does the car use more oil or water lately ?

does the engine sound different compared to when it still worked ok (rattles, more noisy or muffled) ?

Sofar it's just a wild guess, but maybe your (pre-)cats are blocked..

Need to know about the smoke mate really - Or get a compression / leak down test done - im sure Andy Duff can fit you in for one - if you want to use a guy that knows what he is doing ( you owe me a fiver for that numb nutts)... otherwise a compedent garage shuold be able to do it - or DIY if you ahavea compression tester!

Dont think it will be the Precats - 92 uk specs dont have any! but there could be a blockage elsewhere in the system like in the main cats.

You sure your timing isn't out by a notch or 2?

Thanks again everybody.

There is no discernable increase in smoke, and the car isn't burning any more oil, there is a "lurch" on occasion when I lift off the accelerator at about 1500-2000rpm when decelerating.

How do I check to see if my timing is out? I wouldn't have a clue with the coil packs.

Thanks again,

Brian

Forgive me if I state the obvious but you did do the brutal thing and launch hard off the line? You got to near redline in each gear before auto chanegeup?

I didnt try 0-100 in mine but I know that kickdown hard from a stand start gets to near the redline in every gear. Never clocked the dials properly cause I'm too busy holding on!
