Evening, ive had smoked lights on most of my cars with a spare set for MOT's,

But with this car spares are pricey. So im wondering if they are actually legal or not?

Ive had jet black before and the light can still be seen through them. Is it just a case of the reflector must still be seen?

Thanks

Mark

(im talking about the rear lights btw, but im thinking of doing the front stuff black also)

Rear lights are fine as long as the reflector is visible when the lights are off and obviously the bulbs are bright enough to shine through the lens.

Im not sure you can tint the front headlight glass, legally. You can have a blacked out casing to give the effect of tinting inside the housing, but not the glass, just done a google search for both.

Sorry i didnt mean the headlights, i meant the indicator and side light parts. But cheers groover thats what i thought. Can you take the reflector out of the lights, mine look a bit wobbly :whistling:

i dont want to push too hard and brake them. Ill just mask off otherwise

front tints are illegal same as stobes..but as above as long as rear brake lights are clearly visable u shouldnt have a problem

So fitting front smoked sidelights is ok but if its indicators and sidelights its a no no?

na...front indicators are nono side reapeters are ok if its a light tint not sure about front side lights..id imagine theyd be illegal since there facing oncoming cars and might not be seen by oaps and blind folk that are allowd to drive(that last bits my opinion)

On my e30 i had jet black indicators up front and side and jet black lights, i never had any trouble with police, but i did always put spares on for the MOT as it only took me 10 minutes and better to be safe than to have a retest

iv always recond that any lights on the direct front of the carhad to be somewhat obstruction free..

thats why headlight eyebrows n stuff had to be a certain shape

i might be talking noncence though

It makes perfect sense, but as long as it is clearly visible whats the problem. I dont know if there is a special test if a light is suspect tinted too much like they do with tinted windows

i think i might just come down to how strict the tester is..he/she might be a jobsworth

i think common senceshould prevail if you can tell the lights are on/flashing enough to see then it should be good

i mean i wouldnt like to have some old buddy smashing into me coz they couldnt see the indicators flashing coz of tints

Ah i give up trying to post pictures, basically i want the rear lights all gloss black (bar the reflector if thats the legality) then where the zed has a black mouth with the various lights in at the front, i want them to be invisible with the mouth, so satin black. The side repeaters im contemplating doing those red as ive got a red car. Of not they will be gloss black like the rears.

I do think its down the MOTer in the end, might just keep my eye out for some cheap spares

what you need to bare in mind is the police and vosa work to a different standards so if your car passes its mot you can still be pulled over and prosecuted for something if the copper feels its not roadworthy. This is not hearsay or pub talk. Its fact chaps. When i took my testers course this is explained in great detail.

For example my 99 spec front indicators look smoked, but the lens is actually clear, the internal housing is black, giving the effect of smoked. side indicators can be smoked, but again as long as the light is visible, should be fine.

Dazvert has used a tint on his front sidelights too to give the stealth look.

I think the rule of thumb is that as long as the light is clearly visible and bright enough to operate as it should, then you will be ok.

We have a couple of MOT testers on the forum that could give you the definitive answer.

If in doubt do a google search or check out the dvla website for the legalities.

OOh i like that, but im wanting jet black on the rear. Although i will have a think about that for everything else. Nice one Murmur

never had a problem passing the MOT with my rear lights, although, if i happened to pass a copper on a bad day, i'm pretty sure he would pull me

Ive never had any problems with my tinted front indicators as long as the amber light shines through sufficiently.

Also for the rears, what i did was got some reflective tape and mount it to some magnetic strip so that i can just stick the relectors onto the rear of the car for MOT and other such occasions, just to be safe :)

Your lights silverbullet is what im after but with a coat of gloss on after. If thats good for the MOT then it should be fine.

And that is a very good idea pbryant knight

my front indicators are jet black and rears were too,i redone the rears as wanted them to look really shiney but mot bloke failed the rears and passed the front indicators, even though you could see the lights through the black when on and reflectors werent sprayed black,so got a set off jeff back to standard, the mot bloke said put the black ones back on if you want just needed to see orginals for mot.
