Bang then horrible driving noise and a wobbly prop? HELP!

Hi All,

So I came onto the dual carrage way, gave it a bit of gas upto 75. Immediately afterwards there was a loud bang followed by a horrendous grinding noise which sounds like my exhaust scraping on the floor. Pulled over and nothing underneath so drove 6 miles home at about 10mph sounding like a tractor!

I jacked up the car when I got home and the grinding noise appears when I turn the wheels, it is more dominant when turning the wheels forward.

Where the prop joins the diff there is ALOT of play which leads me to believe the pinion or (centre?) bearing has disintegrated? Is this right? What is the right bearing I need?

Is this the correct diagnosis? Is it difficult to replace?

Let me know if you need anymore info!

Thanks,

Tom

shouldnt be any play at the diff . if its got a lot of play i,d guess that your diff has give up the ghost . the centre bearing will give you play in the middle of the prop if its weak but not at the diff

Thanks for the reply, is there a bearing between the diff and the prop that could need replacing?

A pinion bearing or something of the sort?

Hoping its not the diff!

Agreed with above if you have play at the diff, then sounds as though its gone. That would explain your horrible scraping/grinding noise.

mark the flanges on the prop to diff end and open these bolts, check for play in the pinion bearing that way.Not sure if the bearing will pull out if you open the centre nut on the flange, getting that open might be a ball ache without an impact gun.

Gonzos also subscribed and allowed to sell:nono:

I think he was referring to the above post that he posted before

Here someones bound to have one mate

Therefore i beat him to saying someone on here has one and not that he was selling one

How much would you be looking for the one off your breaker Gonzo? Just moved out from parents so limited fundage what with Christmas and all!

Car maybe having to wait to the New Year to get back on the road!

Thanks for the heads up! Will follow this advice!

the only joint is in the centre . if the plays at the back by the diff , thats where your problem is likely to be .
