Lowering car, advice please about springs!

Hi Guys, just me again,

I have decided to change my shock absorbers for some uprated Konis and have been given some 35mm stiffer lowering springs.

I am tempted to whip them in as well and lower the car.

Is that a good idea?

Have any of you had problems with the car being that low ?

Also if I am changing the shocks will the new uprated shocks be compatible with the old stock springs or should I use the new stiffer ones?

Many thanks,

Amer.

...are you sure you want to do that...

I can only say that having spent a fortune on a full strosek kit and then shorter springs to lower the car... I shouldn't have done the latter! The car was impractical and bloody annoying to use. I had to find special routes to all the places that I wanted to go (that did not include road humps) It took me two weeks and about 20 MOT garages to find a ramp that I could get onto (for the MOT), and despite being a V careful driver - I managed to hit stuff (usually at night - some road humps are not easy to see in the dark) and wreck my front spoiler/nose cone and damage parts of the original bodywork where they join! Not to mention the risk to the underside of your car (expensive). I have since gone back to standard springs on new shocks - and I actually think the car looks just as good.

Amer,

you will have a bigger problem if you have aftermarket front spoiler or maybe side skirts.

I, along with a lot of others also have lowering springs, and i only have trouble with some speed bumps and multi storey car parks.

If you dont use these much, then you should be fine, but make sure you think about where you drive first.

If you lower it with springs you'll also have to remember that you'll get negative camber which will quickly destroy the inside edges of your tyres. If you go up sizes in rims to 17/18 or 19 it'll happen even quicker so you maybe better also budget for adjustable top links front and rear so you can re-set camber.

Thanks Guys,

I have since just ordered a set of shocks and am going to leave the old springs on.

Thanks again !!

Amer.
