Idle problems

Zed has started to play up (5 weeks of ownership) it stutters when cold and once warm it will not idle correctly and sits at 1500 rpm, ocassionally I heard a clicking noise under the bonnet (drivers side) sounds a relay going mad and the idle starts to vary 1000 -1500. The worse thing is that it does not do it all the time. I've checked the connections and all appear ok. Any ideas as to where best to start. Thanks in advance

sounds very much like there's something wrong with the temp-sensor...either the connector is corroded/broken or the sensor itself is dead.

Ours sometimes does that, when the A/C is on then the revs rise, if you switch it off it goes down to about 800rpm, but somertimes with the A/C off cold or warm it will rev like a mad thing and idle at 1500rpm. I wonder why anyone know why it mysteriously likes to change idle speed?

Temp sensor temp sensor temp sensor.... That's it!!! When the ecu receives no signal from the temp sensor it automatically advanves the timing and ups the revs as a safety feature. Pull the connector off the yellow temp sensor on the top ally pipe coming out from the front of your engine and check the contacs - green=must clean wink.gif

Any more info you need just ask wink.gif

I have this problem sometimes and it seems to be a dodgy wire on the throttle switch. Jiggle the wires and its fine again.

thanks for the advice, will track the temp sensor down over the weekend and give it a good clean.

Will keep you posted.

Cheers

I vote with Devil

Throttle position sensor. When mines was doing the same, wiggling the TPS connector usually brought it down to normal. Clean up the connections. Take it off and on thats often enought to wipe oxide off. Also maybe your due to clean your throttle bodies out.

Drove into work this morning, engine now idling at a pleasant 2000 rpm, makes for an interesting drive in heavy traffic. Deceided to have a look under the bonnet. Checked the wiring and all appeared Ok. Wiggled the wires on the top passenger side of the engine (nr a small black box connected to the top side of the engine) and presto the idle dropped to 800rpm. Will investigate further. Thanks for everyones help.

Thats the TPS - there's actually two connectors for this, one directly on the box and another on a 'flying lead'. Clean them both up and everything should be fine...
