hey guys,

ive just got rid of my cruddy bmw 316 compact.

just bought my first 300zx twin turbo! had to travel to london to get her, needs a bit of work tho, got her back on sunday nite,

bin driving abit since then and ive stumbled across some issues/problems i was hoping you could help me with.

ok, ill start with telling you what i know about her first,

k reg, jap import (no certificate :( ) it is registered though, got pulled over on way home lol, all legal lol.

has had auto to manuel conversion done by mechanic? this is what the previous owner has told me. also can tell by peddles has extra one for the clutch but Big brake.twin turbo, targa top, used to have cloth interior but previos owner swapped for leather,

when i drove her back from london some 150 miles it didnt miss a beat, no knocks, clunks, etc - it does need a new nearside front shock but told me that when i bought it, had to climb in through boot! as alarm didnt work and has no key for the doors only ignition and boot. fixed the fob now so all good again. needs new brake pads/discs,oil change, tyres,

since monday nite as ive been inspecting ive noticed a few things and problems.

it has manuel bleed valves on the actuators which are wound all the way down, want these gone and returned to stock. its only boosting to a tiny bit over the first fat line on the boost guage, it goes to +7 if that helps.

also my fan belt is squeaking but my bat is very low, power light flashes at me sometimes. gonna charge it tonight,

BIG ISSUE: i dont have a overheating issue, its always at just below half. but my system doesnt seem to hold water? no leaks underneath. but when i went to check the water leval, took the cap off couldnt see anything cos of the shape of that rad, so unsrewed that black cap on the drivers side of the rad. couldnt see any water? so filled her back up with both caps off, squeezing the hose to get rid of air, filled till over fill the small hole on drivers side, screwed the cap in, put the rad cap back on, went to work this morning, came home, checked again, still couldnt see water? one thing i have noticed, my passenger floor is soaked! heater matrix maybe, how can i be sure? can i fix without ripping dash out? also i looked in rad whilst engine running at temp, and theres very very tiny little bubbles, i hoping the this isnt headgasket? no excesive water in exhaust,or lack of power, well dont feel like it but my first Z, could this mean something else, if so can i fix it,

im hoping that by charging battery tonight, would i be right in thinking this would reset ECU?, it would return to standard boost? or fix my next issue, when running, if i lightly touch the throttle, like 1mm,it bogs right down but every rpm after its fine, like the bit of slack between the pedal and cable, tiny amount, make it bog, but runs fine?accelerates fine. even if i rev it under bonnet, just a touch and itl bog, or if i (blip) the throttle, bog then growl.could this be to the battery being so low? hmm?

last thing lol., when im going 3-6 mph, walking pace and gentle press brake, i get a rather comical Boing sound lol? sounds like its coming from the middle left,i can feel it in the peddle, press the brake firm i dont get it or hear it, or at more speed? any ideas what it could be? oh wait one more thing, ive got a grey rectangle plug just above pedals, he also gave me a cable with what looks to be the male end to it with USB on the other end, What can i use this for? i have a small green wire going into the ECU if it helps, but that could be for alarm maybe, viper alarm blue remote, aux function dont do anything just lock and unlock.

really sorry to go on and on and on. but this is one of my dream cars, and now i have worked hard to get one, i dont want my first Z experience to be a BAD one.lol.

thanks very much.

Welcome to the forum bud,

Heater matrix or pipe from back of engine on the inside of the car is split, you can do the Heater matrix with out ripping the dash out but its one fiddly bloody job.

+7 boost only, is safety boost. you will need to do a ecu check to find out what codes are showing as to why its in safety boost.

Then reset the ECU drive for a bit and see if you get the same codes.

Reason your temp is showing that its not over heating is its reading air rather than water temp, so you should really have the car off the road until you either do a matrix by pass or fix it.

The nearest zed specialist to you is Zedworld in tamsworth. give jeff a ring, his contact details are in the traders section.

If you need more info on any of the points ive raised, let me know.

spot on, thanks very much ill start having a good look as soon as i can, any reason for tiny bubbles? if i was underneath the car, back of the engine, would i be able to see and or have a feel for leaks? im not getting the 7 boost, im getting half of what the guage does, ive got a aftermarket boost guage but i cant see it in the dark, but ill post when i can read it.

is there any software i can download that can read the codes through that grey plug?

thanks again guys.

Tiny bubbles are indicative of a leak, it has to let air in to leak water out.

You can use a program called Blitz / data scan or consults to read engine codes. or you can do it the cheap way and take the kick plate out from behind the little carpet flap in the passenger foot well, on the side of the ECU behind the wooden board. is a little screw on the left hand wall of the casing. turn this screw fully clock wise, wait 2 seconds, then turn fully counter clock wise. you will now be in diagnostic mode. now go watch the flashes on the dash (engine light) long flashes indicate the first number, short the second. if it reads 55 (5 long followed by 5 short) no codes are being registered. if its readying anything other than that. jot them down, take the battery off for 1 hour to reset the ECU, reconnect it. take it for a drive (obviously being careful as you have a water leak) and then check again.

If you have code / codes showing anything other than 55, put them up and ill let you know what circuit we are looking for a fault on.

the water pipes that go to the matrix are near the top of the engine slightly to the drivers side at the back.they go into the firewall and then to the matrix. you can do a temporary fix by looping the pipes at the back of the engine. so one feeds into the other. but you will lose heating inside the car, but should stop your floor getting soggy.

hi sam.if your not busy at the weekend you can bring it to me as ive software for fault reading and plenty of experience with the zeds...lee

mate that would be Amazing, id love to.if thats ok with you of course? just dont laugh lol, its my new project lol.

And thanks vodkashots!!! i will do it now actually lol, gota take bat off anyway, post new codes tomoro afta work

gota make a brew n im on it, also how do i put it bak to normal mode? lol

disconnect battery should do it :)

ok, had to turn it back and to once or twice, but i got it, its 55.just kept repeating 55, thats good i suppose, dont xplain the bog or the boinging noise lol.il try the bypass soon as.

what should i do now, i read the codes then turned it back all the way clock wise, shall i take bat out now?

thanks.sam

welcome to the club mate .

the bogging down issue could well be dodgy 02 sensors . had the same issue with mine . if you know where they are just follow the wires and disconnect the plugs

(one either side ) this got rid of the problem on mine and doesnt have an adverse affect on running .

is there not two sets? just had a quik look at the the back of the engine, theres one in the turbo elbows, must be another one in the exhaust system? also the small(2'') rubber hose thats is connected to the 90degree fitting into the bulkhead, that leads to the fuel damper is bit loose and brittle? dont think its leaking anything. just yanked the bat gona put it on charge now. as regard to o2 sensors, coulod i just disconnect temporarily then see if it runs better, if not just plug em back in.

thanks.

yes mate . just unplug them and take it for a spin . mine have been unplugged for a couple of months now and shes running better . i was talking to ianl at japfest and he told me his have been unplugged for about a year iirc . if it doesnt help just plug em back in .

sweet, ill do that after work tomorrow, hope they ok,there expensive lol, on my cambelt cover, it says,01,odd reading:73823, current milage 90odd, think it needs doin? if so how much? lol

hi sam.if your not busy at the weekend you can bring it to me as ive software for fault reading and plenty of experience with the zeds...lee

what cables are you using to check the ecu as i have most nissan software from uprev and cypher but not sure what cable to use... mines is a 93 tt auto

OK,just got back from the nightmare! of trying to get back from work. its a mile or so down the road!

ok i checked my fault codes last nite, had none,55, charged battery-reset ecu,and on the drive home, the car ran like a bag of S***!!! that bogging i was on about was practicly stalling the car, the idle was 2000rpm- 950rpm when it felt like it, pulled over, idle went to normal, went under bonnet, tried to make it bog from the throttle bar. no bog, fine, typical,

hopd bak in,pulled out of junction, doin it again! steering went abit heavy, cudv bin my imagination cos its ok now?

im getting stessed, can someone help me? maybe shed some light?

p.s i was havin a peek around engine bay at lunch found dat my passengerside turbo elbow o2 sensor the wires next to the plug, one had a choc block and one had a split in the insulation, gonna try unpluging it after dinner, cant find the plug for the drivers side.

dont stress mate . simple things first is always the best way . if you have no luck stick a post up for jefftt or give him a call at zedworld

ahhh, thanks buddy.

a nice brew calmed me down, got a fault code 13, cleaned the sensor. sorted issue, must order new sensor. just having intermitant power steering now lol.

thanks again

UPDATE:

cleaning that sensor last night has sorted the running problems, next on my list is:

oil/filter change,

find out why im still only getting 6psi, reset ECU again, check codes again.

find out where the water in footwell is coming from,

find out wat that hissing noise is when i shut down engine, sounds like top left side of engine bay, this could be my water leak although have noticed improvement in water pressure,

change all the pads,tighten handbrake,

change the front shocks.tyres.

get it all checked over at zedworld, see if they know what that weird boing noise is, its coming from the back im sure.

fit hard pipes and bailey BOV's that i have from the previous owner.then its time for the respray, im thinking gloss black with a crimson red metal flake in the laquer, i can do it at work so can have watever i want :)

ahhh, thanks buddy.

what sensor did you clean?

hi,it was the temperatur sensor for the ECU, yellow plug, on the left of the two that are on the water pipe behind the fan.

thanks mate.

sam

ah i cleaned mine also... looked relatively new though.
