You know I've been offered a new job, within the hospital, as a healthcare assistant rather than as a medical secretary?

Had an offer of a job, which is subject to references and CRB etc. The letter says my new manager will confirm my start date and salary.

Been told verbally that the start date is 1st December, the salary will be the same as I am on, because the job is a grade lower than my current one, so they will mediquate it to the same money although again only been told this verbally.

Spoke to recruitment today who say they have sent me all they will be sending me, and anything else comes from my manager.

Is it just me or am I being over cautious in not wanting to hand in my notice til I have a confirmed start date and salary? What if they back out? I'd have no job and because I'd resigned, I'd not be entitled to claim anything either.

Help!!

Best to be like a monkey. Never let go of one branch untill you have got your hand firmly on another lol!!,

Especally the way things are at the min :(

Everything NEEDS to be in writing nowadays. particularly with NHS.

My youngest is currently a HCA in a theatre setting.

i nearly got done this way a couple of years ago i handed in my notice from my council job on the pretence i was to start a couple of weeks later with a private landscaping company..well the company i was meant to be starting with turnd round an said they could no longer afford to take on new employees..long story short i had to beg for my job back

get i in writting first before you do anything

Thanks all - spoke to my mum who has also said the same thing (she worked in the NHS for 38 yrs)

I'll sit tight and wait for something formal to come in.

Not sure who exactly it'll come from given recruitment seem to think they have met their end of the deal....

i think recruitment ends with setting up job interviews and the like

the prospective employer should be in charge of sorting out paper work

I'll give the ward sister a call tomorrow, see what I can sort out - if she wants me then I'll have to get it in writing. Argh, so frustrating, Monday is the latest I can give my current boss a month's notice!

If you've been offered the job could you not just go and speak to the potential new manager to find out more?

As above though, until you have something in concrete dont give up your current role.

Out of interest, if its a lower role why are you going for it? Side to to other things perhaps?

We had a conversation on the corridor today and she said my start date is def 1st Dec, she was less certain about the salary though.

As for why - its a healthcare assistant role - good hands on experience for me prior to starting my nurse training in Sept 2011 - and it gets me out of an office job I don't enjoy

you should've followed on your corridor conversation by saying 'my start date will be a month after i have this in writing if you dont get a contract to sign by monday'

I go with Joel on this one, say you need written confirmation of start date and salary and role by the 1st of November so you can hand in your notice with a months notice otherwise you can only start 1 months from when you've officially handed in your notice.

Thanks again all

I've emailed the sister this morning asking her to confirm when my start date will be and what the salary be, and explained that I am unable to resign from my current post until I have this information in writing.

It took 8 weeks for my CRB for this job - I could feasibly resign from this job on Monday and not get my CRB check through til late December, so be unemployed for a month - I just can't take the risk.

So frustrating

Im sure they will understand.

Do you have any holiday you could tag on the end of your notice? That way, you could give notice a bit later and still start on the 1st.
