Hi Matt, welcome to the club mate, I think a lot of us on here are on the Aus forum too, including me, they have some great motors over there, nice zed by the way, where abouts are you? I did the east coast in a camper a few years ago, loved it

looks like you've done a damn good job with that!

Hey man, nice vinyl. My mate did a propper matte black spray though. Its perrrrfect, seriously, and the paint is so thick that its very difficult to scratch. Two days after he got the car back, some pikeys tried to put two big scratches on the bonnet, but they couldnt leave a mark as the paint was tough. To get this kind of matte black spray done perfectly would cost about £1700 minimum if your lucky. Anyone interested, I can pass on the sprayers details ;)

Im on the gold coast, most southern part of Queensland :)

That looks fantastic mate, ive got a soft spot for matt/satin black. nice wheels too, r32 gtr?

cheers!

They are 17" OZRacing, thats all i know about them, they came with the car and suited silver really nicley. They are going black though :D

did you cut slice pannel or just rough sizes, and heat wrapped it and cut the excess off?

Was it easy to do

If you go into the link you can see how i did each panel. The width of the roll is 1230mm and length unlimited (well 23m in my case) so i could do every panel with one sheet.

It takes about 1-6 hours per panel and you have to heat it up and lay it. Matte is one of the hardest vinyl to lay as every little imperfection shows through.

looks like you did a brill job. was it easy to do?

not at all lol. took me about 4 hours and a few meters just to get to a point where is was AVERAGE at it. after about 50 hours i think im pretty good now.

Very nice, how does the cost compare to getting a re-spray.

well im not sure about currency conversion right now but in $AUD

its about 6000-8000 for a full respray here. it cost me 500 in vinyl and about 50 hours.

thanks for all the kind words, its been a lot of fun and i love doing/seeing something a little different.

have you guys got anything unique, like crazy widebodies haha?

matt.

:)

some of our more mad peeps have V8's in their zeds, some have too much bling that NASA had to move the Hubble space telescope just so they could get pictures of the moon as the reflection off of the bling was just too great and giving Hubble some serious glare issues. (I'm looking at you beegeevins lol) have a scout around there are loads of different zeds here.

Yea we have a few v8 builds on the aus forums right now, VH45's.

Also an ls1 which is pretty crazy.

Pic of the front bar fresh from the mold courtesy of ztoy. 1 week he says :D

I don't have any pics of how it looked originally but you can see in this one that the trim is pretty close to the edge and you could see silver bits. I didn't even think to remove the lights when i was doing it, thought it would just tuck under nicely. Well no it doesn't :p

img3403f.jpg

Trimmed it off and placed new strips in there and put the center panel on.

You can also see the upper edge of the rear bar and little bits of silver showing through. It completely ruins the effect and that bit will be getting redone when the new rear bar goes on.

Looks a lot different.

An easy and well spent 20 mins with a few scrap pieces.

Thats about it for this week. Should be getting my LED kit next week and hopefully front bar toward the end. Ill try to get some more tirmming done.

I've been doing little bits of trimming here and there but nothing major. The under side of the hatch is the next bit part that ill get around to at some point. The the door sills, then the targa area. Also gonna redo a roof part on the passenger side where i jabbed it with a knife :o

A few little things iv been doing over the last couple of days while waiting for the final solid panel, the front bar.

The hatch trim area is a slow and laborious part. As its trim and not exterior i don't mind a join or two. I try to put the joins where the welds are but sometimes its unavoidable. I just really don't want to start cutting huge weird shapes out of my roll for the sake of some seams in the sills.

Even though this is a small part it took a good hour or so.

This is how i had left it while working through the other panels. I didnt want to get hung up on the trim. I like going back now and enjoying it and fixing up all the little things.

img4004y.jpg

I trimmed up the vinyl already on the car so it was a nice straight line then i added this bit.

img4006.jpg

The i added another bit extending up to the weld spot and joined the pieces as best i could.

img4007l.jpg

Replacement roof panel:

Camera and light are bad so i couldn't get a good shot of the hole i jabbed with my knife a while ago. A hole in the vinyl affects its integrity and id rather redo it for peace of mind and to do a better job. This panel was one of my first and if you look very very closely (not in these pics ofc)you could see some stretch marks from me being bad lol.

img4010nv.jpg

Silvery goodness, the vinyl came off pretty easily and the paint looks amazing, like more amazing than when i put the vinyl on. I think because i cleaned it so well and then the vinyl being so adhered it may have pulled off some of the surface imperfections that possibly weren't cleaned off. I dunno, all i know is its really really shiny and clean :p

img4011cb.jpg

Throw on a square. The first time i did this it took me 10 mins or something doing it inch by inch. This time i used the straight edge of the roll and lined it up with the top. Heat and pull it tight and laid it with one press :D

img4012g.jpg

Trimmed up the edges, then super heat and fold them under. Trim the sides so it doesn't look too messy before i get back to doing it.

img4014a.jpg

that's all for the last few days, hope you enjoyed it.

Waiting on a few things to arrive that are unrelated to vinyl so there might be a post about that. Otherwise front bar on Monday.

until next time..

Looks good mate, nice too see you taking your time on it, and funny how you can tell your getting better as it goes on. almost finished now though. would love to do something like that on mine, but just dented the rear end so sorting that out first.

Give all our love to the Aus site though matey. and good luck with your project. cant wait to see the finished motor.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm loving that.

If I had the time I'd love to attempt to do that to my E39.

Forgot to ask, How tough is it in regards to stone chips etc? Also what sort of temperatures is it good for?

I'm loving this, it's more of a satin black than matt black, has a slight shine to it, very tasty....

Pretty resistant, the stones bounce off the vinyl rather than chip. I post heat to 80ish degrees at which point the vinyl loses its memory. Its been out in super hot days and it looks the same as vinyl iv just put on.

Your right, it is sort of satin. Its just the difference in products i guess. Avery matte black is different again. Comparing it to matte black paint its nothing alike. satin paint..nothing alike. which is pretty cool..
