I had driven my Z for approx 20 miles today before stopping at a set of lights, as soon as I had stopped I noticed lots of smoke blowing past me, it was coming out of the exhaust. It was quite a substantial amount - enough to make me close my window as it began to come inside the car, it soon cleared and by the time the lights changed it was completely clear and didnt smoke again for the rest of the journey...

 

The smoke smelt, but I dont recall it being very blue in colour. Although it did all happen quite quick as I wasnt expecting it.

 

Is this a sign of poor turbo seals? or something else?

 

What options have i got?

it is very cold today, mayby just steam mate, however you did say it smelt so perhaps not?

doesnt this sometimes happen with faulty pcv valves?? or am i wrong? was it coming from the actual exhaust exits or from under the car?

no definatly not steam, it smelt and lingered (too heavy for steam) and yes definatly from out the exhaust pipes, however, it might have been just one side but not 100% sure, the last time I saw this was a couple of years ago mid summer when I left it ticking over for about 10 minutes on a very hot day... but have never seen it since, until today

Cant say I have noticed on the inside of the exhaust, but the back of the car does get black particles on it when I have been driving hard, although they are easy to notice as it is a white car

I disagree mine did that once last year, Gave it a good foot full of the lights loads of white smoke, and since that day not a thing, no smoke since!!! and my car boosts perfectly. it could be any number of things!! really need to know what colour the smoke was and just keep an eye on it for now.

they can smoke on tickover if the pcv valves are dodgy . hopefully its this as its a relatively cheap and easy fix

In my quest for answers to my smoking problem on my breaker when i was going to be putting it on the road, i found a few issues that make up smoking rear ends.

 

- Steam - White - Dissipates quite quickly when exiting the exhausts - cold mornings while the condensation builds up and then gets heated up on the inside of the exhaust

- PCV - White with a tinge of blue - Hangs around a bit longer and isnt noticeable on boost - Tends to smoke from start and also while driving not large amounts of smoke but has a hint of oil smell about it

- Over filling with oil on oil change - White with a tinge of blue - same as PCV

- Beginning of turbo seal failure - White with a tinge of blue - Smells of exhaust gas mixed with oil - happens after 4 to 5 minutes of idling after a drive and can be noticeable on boost

- Turbo seal failure - Heavy white / blue smoke - Smells very thick of oil - happens from engine start and fogs the place out smoke lingers and makes your car look like its onfire lol

- Over fueling - Strong smell of unburnt fuel - Smoke is light gray to heavy soot happens from engine start but not as noticeable unless driving

- Head gasket failure - Thick white clouds of smoke - very lumpy engine - noticeable at all rev ranges

 

Ok this isn't a comprehensive list of symptoms and causes, but this is what my vast amount of research most commonly pointed to. PLEASE NOTE some symptoms mirror other causes, so its best to start with the simple and easy to reach things and eliminate them first as possible causes.

That little peice of information should be a sticky! Think you just solved my smoking issue. Sounds like mine is over fueling, it does stink of petrol when you start it up from cold lol
