I need to replace my original spoiler with a fiberglass copy of the same type. Does anyone know if I can get away with just painting the spoiler, or will the tailgate have to be done too?

If you're replacing the Rubber spoiler with a fiberglass one of the same type you'll be able to get away with painting the spoiler. If the tailgate paint is old then there may be some difference in colour. That said, if thats the case and you then paint the whole tailgate then the rear quarters won't match 100% then you do them and the doors won't match etc etc. before you know know it you've dont the whole car.
