There are so many brands of oil that I don't know what to get for the best. When I first start my car up, it makes a knocking noise but then it goes away after a couple of seconds. Sometimes it comes back but if I rev it again, it goes!

most of us use a good quality full synthetic oil. (Mobil 1, Castrol, Redline)

Motorex 0W40 / 5W40 works for me (100% Synth), Swiss Oil, at least as good as Mobil 1.

Used Mobil 1 0W40 for years, good product.

(they simply refused to sell me 200l of oil at the same time, that was a mistake).

About your ticking noise, here's a "dirty fix"...pour one glass of Dextron ATF III Gearbox oil into your engine, will fix the lifter tick....it's possible as well that you're a LITTLE low, check your level

Zee you

You'll get every response under the sun to this one m8 smile.gif

My reccommendation is that there's a bit of trial and error involved.. I've found 0W40/50 oils to be too thin for all my turbo cars, but then they've always had a hard life (previous owners).. If your oil seals are in good nick (like Henri's) then 0W40 or 0W50 (Mobil1) is a good choice (I've run this in my NA car for years now). If it smokes, then try 5W40.. The Max weight I'd reccommend though is 15W50, any higher than that and methinks you have a definite turbo seal problem - plus any higher than that will push oil pressures up too high when cold IMHO..

Az

Really Az. I bought some 0-40 when I first bought my Z and I posted on TT.net, before I knen of this, and they said it was too think and go for 15-40. So I bought Mobile 1 15-40 even though they only sell it in 4 litre bottles and the Z needs 4.5. But the 0-40 I bought was 4.5l. Would you say that is OK?

I have noticed my oil pressure getting close to the high mark in the mornings.

Stuart

Theoretically, 0w50 or 0w40 is perfect - when cold it's nice and thin, so can get around the engine quickly, form a nice thin protective layer of oil (oil films on moving parts are only ever thin remember), unlike thick oil which will have a harder time getting around, getting between stuff etc..

The trouble is, that in my experience 0w40 oil is too thin, and ends up disappearing out of your turbo seals... Henri's engine has been *well* looked after, so his seals are most likely perfect, hence 0w40 oil is great for him..

Best to experiment, basically.. I know - expensive experimentation!

One other thing to remember, is that generally in America (especially where a lot of the Zeds are owned - California etc) it's a lot warmer, even at night, than over here.. So a 15W50 over there may well not actually be as 'thick' as a 15W50 oil is over here in the morning..

See where I'm coming from? smile.gif

Personally, I've found 15W50 doesn't smoke at all in my car, so next time round I'll try a 10W40 or 10W50 oil and see what it's like..

I'd stick with a 10/50 or 15/50 that is fully synthetic and change it regularly. Every 3000 if you do lots of shortish journeys (

I'm not sure it's worth bothering with Mobil-1, it's expensive and you're paying for the name, maybe if the car lives on the track it's worth it. But I'd never buy the cheap and nasty Tesco stuff. Halfords fully synth is probably OK.

Have a read here :- http://www.geocities.com/chrislonghurst/engineoil_bible.html

Halfords Fully Synth is OK, went from Castrol RS 0/40 to Harrys 10/40 to Redline 10/30. No probs at all.

:)

ive had anything from elf racing oil 0w-40 to 15-50 mobile and to be honest it makes no difference to me.

Id rather stick with a thicker oil, ie 15-50 mobile.

At the end of the day i suspect just like the fuel we recieve it is all a bit of a farce.

Do you really need an oil that will last while tearing around silverstone race circuit when you can only do that once a year for 10 minutes ???

Valvoline SynthPower 5w50.

Thin but not too thin, yet able to hold its structure under high load/temperature.

Castrol RS 10/60 fully synthetic wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif.

Just a thought - Nissan oil filters are about £6 - about the same as Halfords also while you're in there you can get copper oil drain plug washers at £1.20 ea - if you dont you always get drips from the plug and risk stripping it if you think you'll stop it by just tightening it.

Castrol RS 0-40 full synthetic

Willie

last time i used harries 5/40

but its gon up to 27 quid so this time i bought some chevron from cost co it is 5/40 fully synthetic and it has all the api numbers on that moble 1 has on and it was only 9 quid for 4 liters though

think it is well known in america

says on botle about that it is used in nascar

HY !!

Use Castrol RS 10W60 synt. best for turbos and hot running engines..........(10W60 is only by castrol.....)

CIAO Andrew

But .... given our current weather the engine is not 'hot running' My water temp doesn't go above 79 deg C at the moment, roughly 84 deg C in the Summer. Don't confuse, hot under the bonnet with a hot running engine and don't expect high oil pressure on a Zed motor at tickover - it's not that type of pump.
