Not quite sorted.....

Well as some of you may have seen, i had a problem with my auto box not selecting gears recently. I followed some advice from you guys and swapped fluid, no difference, then took of sump and cleaned out strainer, and replaced the fluid again. Hey Presto she worked, drove a couple of miles last night no problem so i took hr into work today but i noticed that at low speeds, (ie 1st and 2nd gear) she is changing gear ok but there is a slightly high pitched whirring noise (also in P when you rev - same noise) This noise is not noticeable when in higher gears.

When i say she is changing gears ok, when i start her up and stick it in D there is more of a noticeable jolt than before when she engages the gear and likewise when the box goes from 1st to 2nd there is more of a noticeable jolt too.

I think i might have put too much fluid back in this time, as indicated by the dipstick.

I was going to go through the whole process again, (ie take off sump and clean out strainer again) which i thought might help as maybe the fluid not drained out last time might be causing this, but does anybody have any ideas as to why it might be doing this?

Thanks in advance

Drain and replace. The problem you have is that there is a good couple of litres in the torque convertor ( big drum attached to the flywheel) that still may be crap oil. So after you have done what you have done, any oil passing through the convertor will be now blocking the strainer again.

Another flush and refill might do the trick.

Do you think there is any mileage in draining and removing sump again to clean the strainer again as said diirty fluid would have left contamination on the filter. Or just do a swap of the fluid? I know which is easier

Lol, you know nothing is ever easy on a zed. You may find the strainer is clogging up again, from the contaminated oil in the torque convertor. I know its a pain, but same process as before, drain, clean the strainer and new oil.

Mate, i feel like clarkson when he fixed fixed the unbalanced wheel on that old Porsche with a euro, i am up for anything now, and will be getting her back up on Friday and doing the whole thing again.

I just pray that it sorts her out......

unfortunately clarksons euro fix didnt last too long either . hope you get it sorted mate . i wonder is there a way you could attach a hose and suck all the oil out leaving it completely dry using a vaccum pump. im sure somebody will let us know if there is a way or maybe attach an air line to the filler tube and force the oil out .

if you have done it once then it wont be to bad the second time, as said before you can only flush about 2/3s of the oil out so each time you change it it gets cleaner, even if you could just drain the oil its well worth cleaning the strainer again. you can take it off and give it a good clean out in petrol.

to be absolutely sure you could give it another change in 6 months once the weather is better

You also need to flush the cooler and pipe work.

This has been mentioned by others, but how would i do it? Please bear in mind that i have limited technical/mechanical abilities.

Thanks bud
