Well managed to sort out the power steering leak, and for some reason today when reconnecting the belt for the water pump, i bought it up to temperature and no leaking anywhere, very strange even made sure there was coolant in the rad.

So thought id decide to take it down to the local for some go go juice. put £20 in it, and started driving home, took it around the local ring road as i wanted to see if she would hold her temp, went to put my foot down to over take a pug 106, the moment i hit boost, there was a very loud pop and no power? it drives, just no power at higher boost levels, it almost feels as if something is trying to drag the car backwards in spurts is the only way of describing it. like I'm getting serious det issues.

Boost leak? or wet MAF as it did rain quite hard yesterday.

nope had a look, first thing i did was drop speed to 40, then pull in at a Gym and pop the hood, thought it might of been a rad hose popping off, or a belt at first. checked all vacuum hoses, but i have a feeling its a wet maf, when i was under the car today there was a lot of water in the engine cover pouring onto my head :cursing: might go take it off the car and have a check and if necessary use the woman's hair dryer on it lol

Man your car's cursed!!! Really hope you get all these glitches fixed and you enjoy driving it soon. I'd have been wounded not taking a pug 106 lol

Yeah i know, i was gutted lol

i wonder if the symptoms of a wet MAF differ slightly between makes of filter/setups of car - when its been raining hard and I build up boost past a certain level, there's no pop but the car will literally cut out for half a second, but will drive fine off boost. makes me jump a bit but i know when to expect it

that sounds like what im suffering, i have the HKS mushroom filter, so its probably damp. might of come in off the nose panel as the bonnet was open yesterday when it started raining. and it hammered it down in a short space of time before i managed to get the lid closed. i very much doubt its had time to dry out.

Have you checked the intercooler piping sounds exactly the same as what happened to me

^^^^^^^^ mine does somthing similar, only at high speed and when she's really pulling like a train, as if shes suddenly ran out of fuel?!? but if i ease off the throttle slightly she'll carry on going. im almost certain its not maff as it would do it when you floor it in first gear too surely? but it doesn't.

you have poped an intercooler hose off, have a look under the wings/bumper

Ill have a look thanks for the advice, i never thought about them pipes lol

i'd have assumed it would do it in any gear - there's a particular point on my way to work that I reach after about 10/15 minutes of driving that I use as a guide to say the engine is warmed up and the oil is doing its job so as I pass a national speed limit sign I squeeze the boost out gradually just to make sure everythings ok - it's only happened to me in 3rd gear but then again that's the gear I'm in at this point - whether the cut-out is boost-related or rev-related I don't know, but I guess the wet filter can't suck in enough air to feed those hungry turbos.

Well only thing for it is to check and double check all the pipes, it was a very loud bang / pop kind of sound. to be perfectly honest i thought i had popped a rad hose. so i pulled over as soon as i could to check, oil temp was showing 85, water temp gauge was lower thank half way.

So i suppose the best cause of action would be to remove the nose panel and check to see if the filter is wet, if not item to check the intercooler hoses as these are the only ones i hadn't checked.

I have no idea, but i know one thing, i went for a drive and she cut out on me, left me sitting at a junction with my hazards on trying to start it. then once i did start her, i got about half a mile and while doing 30, she died again and the engine light came on, then all of a sudden she jumped back into life and carried on like nothing had happened?

Strange how a power steering pipe fix can cause all these strange occurrences. I've gone over what id done and double checked all pipes and plugs. but cant see anything wrong. I've taken the MAF off, and its dry as a daisy, even the Airfilter is dry.

Think its time for a ECU reset.

The only thing that is different that I've done today is fill her up with sainsburys 97 octane stuff, you don't think that is causing all my problems do you?

ive had bad fuel before turned out the tanks below round had a leak and took in water my car did not like it one bit they shut the garage down for two months the replace the tanks

Jeff, any tips on this problem, or could it just be crappy petrol? symptoms

- Back fire

- feels like it misses on a few cylinders

- does it on boost.

- Hoses are fine

- Loud pop or bang sound (only happened the once though when it first did it)

- Inter cooler pipes are fine

- Dry Airfilter

Going to reset the ECU and see if that helps.

how about your cas connector

Ill have to check that in the daylight. but again, when i did the power steering pipe, i never even went over that side of the engine.

I don't know about it happening in threes. My feeling is that if you've got a 300 IT always happens!:ninja:

Well giving my radiator a flush today, just emptied the water out and my god, don't the Japs ever put Anti freeze in these cars? rusty color is not the word, it looked more like bright brown clay and had a very clay like consistency. that cant be good.

But im still plagued with this strange back fire issue, noticed it tries to do it around 9 PSI, which is normal boost....

Well giving my radiator a flush today

Might find you water leak returns after this, especially with adding antifreeze (has searching properties) as the brown sludge may of sealed up that earlier leak.

The running issue could still be air flow meter related, the loud bang could of been unburnt fuel lighting up in the exhaust.

The air flow meter can cause overfueling when it is failing, no code will be produced as the unit is still effectively be outputing signals albeit wrong ones.

That said electrical connections are the devils own work on the zed engine as we all know only too well, boring I know but you may need to start again and methodically go through each and every engine connector cleaning and refitting, oh and have you done any code check just a a pointer maybe?

I seem to have a phobia about that ECU check lol, i have no idea why, but id rather change an engine than have to fiddle with some tiny screw on the side of the ECU. im being serious here, its giving me goose bumps just thinking about it and making my chest tight, and getting sweaty palms, very strange but thats how it is everytime i think about doing it.... :crying:

Noticed something, it gets worse when the engine is hot as well, don't say its the MAF, I've just swapped my old working one for Groovers DVD screen and player lol (typical)

What induction kit do you have? try a quick blast out with no air filter fitted, have seen some odd ball effects with many types of induction kit, in fact I have a tech thread I will post later with pictures to demonstrate what I mean.

I have the HKS mushroom thing, its rather large to say the least lol, i have a feeling its a connection issue or something, as my suspension is so stiff, when i hit lumps in the road it feels like its going to cut out? so going to have to check all the connections, also going to check the fuses as well, might be one that's blown but is still making a connection.

Just read this thread..man i'm gutted, as i said the only prob i had was that bolt the AA fixed,

And as for the cutting out at the junction!! OMG Thats terrible.

i have to say it, because it happens to everyone, dont you find that when you buy a car from some one who states she's perfect, you have nothing but problems.. what a lying git..except in this case of course. I know what you are going through, the MR2 and Pajero i bought are given me problems, especially the Pajero.

Best of luck once again, and keep in touch

Rich

(for those at the back, it was my car before Vodka bought it)
