Got my 89spec this morning along with my 99spec front bumper form Car.mad this morning. so thought id go get some spray and have a go at the spoiler, wasn't much prep work to be done on it as the quality is spot on. no bends or twists and very clean already, a testament to the skill in making it.

So nipped off down to halfords to see if they had any rattle cans of AH3, well nothing on the shelf so went to there paint department counter and asked if they could mix me up a few rattle cans. having checked the code the dude got to work and made me some 300ml spray cans. with a fan nozzle.

anyway, 3 coats of red undercoat and 3 coats of red paint later here are the results. loving the fan nozzles, so much easier to get a nice finish. please note there is no lacquer on it yet as its currently in the living room resting on my NYC picture having a good dry before tomorrow where its getting another 2 coats of spray, and then ill start building up the lacquer layers.

Doesn't look a bad job there Ian......

.....your car is really coming on mate - I look forward to seeing it in the flesh some time soon!!

stick to pictures for now please lol if you get too close you lose the effect :D

But im really pleased with how the spoiler turned out, its nice and smooth with no runs, just need to tidy up the leading edges of the "wings"

I have a sneaky feeling its slightly darker than whats on it, but im not too fussed, the paint looks fantastic considering someone at Halfords made it for me. if it looks as good on the car, i might just rattle can the whole thing lol

LOL - I doubt you'd notice TBH; owing to the shape of the spoiler and the lines of the car!!

You know i thought that, when i rattled mine with primer, but after £70 in cans i thought, this is going to work out expensive, considering the possible finish.

So i have decided to buy a compressor and gun and give it a go myself properly -ish. If you mess it up, rub it down and start again lol

If you go down that route, let me know how you get on, as i might want to hire your compressor and gun out after. unless you want to bring it up here and we do both cars at the same time lol

If we can get somewhere big enough to do it, im up for that.

Ill have a word with my old boss at yorkward and rowlett, its a vauxhall sales garage but has a repair shop with spray bay, so might even be able to get that, if not ill have a scout around for somewhere that can accommodate us. im sure there are a few farmers who would rent out a barn for a few days for us at a reasonable price.

looks like a good job, just a few tip, dont sand that base coat and if you can give it a wipe down and tack rag before the laquer. the oil from your skin will be on that paint now so you really need some panel wipe. the tac rag will take off all the dust etc just before paint

Ill be up for that, might need more than a couple of days, though, will take a day to mask and prep and primer, although we could do an all nighter on that part lol

if these cars come out looking really good. might suggest we go into business together as resprayers  i know a panel beater as well so could get him in to do any dents (although i find it much easier to just replace the offending part)

Hope you trial fitted it 1st. number one rule with grp stuff.

Looking good btw :)

I miss em from the NYC skyline, they were there when I first went in 1994 and gone when I returned in 2003. Went to Ground Zero, v traumatic.

Good effort with the spoiler, wonder if Halfrauds could do me pearl yellow?!

did indeed, have my tube of tiger seal and also my tin of body filer, but to be perfectly honest, not that much needs doing with it. once blended in with the body, ill be masking off around the boot lid and blending the spoiler in with the car. Ok so not very professional, but its only gotta look like it belongs on the car till i can either get it to a body shop, or me and groover set about spraying our cars.

Any idea how I'd find out of mine is the original pearl yellow or a respray?

First start by opening the bonnet and check the easy things first. locate the Vin plate, and check the color code, next have a look where most people miss with spraying, inside the engine bay its self, see if this matches the rest of the car, although this doesn't necessarily mean its not sprayed as a good respray will include this, other places to check are peal the edges of the rubbers back slightly, your not trying to rip them off, just look for a strong paint line, Open the tailgate, lift the carpet and move the cardboard out of the way, as this rarely gets a respray in here, also check around the edges of the boot opening, for obvious signs of color mismatch as most cant get the top part of the boot where the hinges are, failing that, lift the rear.... never mind you have SWB, basically you want to check inside the car where someone would have to remove panels to respray it, (highly unlikely they would do this, but the whole chassis was sprayed the same color in the factory, so anywhere hidden should show your original color)

You can also check by lifting the Targas, and having a look around the edges too see if you get color mismatch, be careful though due to paint fade in the sun on the out side panels.

Ideally you want to be matching the Vin plate paint code, with whats showing on your car.
