Gargling where?

At the front?

If its coming from the direction of the engine, it could be your water pump, check to see if there is any water leaking out.

If its coming from near your front wheels its your $%* valves under each wheel arch. I put $%* cos I forgot what they are called.

This is what I think but I am sure some one will shed more light on the problem for you

I think theyre called air intake valves (AIVs) there is a how to section on replacement/repair of them on twinturbo.net.

hope this helps,

Brian.

I'll bet money on it, it'll be the AIV valves, it actually gets quite loud, mine sounded as if it was coming frome top left of the engine bay just behind the Brake resorvoir, but like the other guy's have said, it's the AIV valve, easy to do, the filter will be full of condensation (Water)

Dry it out and you will be ok, for a while and it'll come back.

Anybody know of a more permanent cure.

Was actually thinking of drilling a small drain hole, any ideas guy's.

Cheers dave.

Pasted from TT net for you:

"As for the AIV (air injection valves) 'gurgling', they are in the front fender wells behind the plastic shielding at the rear of the front tires. Very few 90-92 ZXs have escaped a failure of these. Symptoms include the 'gurgling' sound at idle that stops just off idle and returns on decel back to idle. Also the car will fail the idle portion of most smog inspections, since the ECU adds 7% more fuel when they operate so the extra air they pump to the catalytic converter has some fuel to burn to keep the cat up to temp. If the AIVs are not sucking air into the exhaust the fuel just passes through making things worse then ever. The fix is to try to clean and align the reeds in the AIVs, replace reeds, or replace the AIVs as an assembly.

Here's the steps to follow to fix the gurgling sounds from inside the front fenders. The Air Induction Valve (AIV) and its air cleaner are located behind the rear plastic fender linings in each fender. The air cleaner housing can retain condensation which is the cause of the sounds. In addition to replacing the air cleaner element, you will most likely need to replace the AIV valve assembly. It's very easy to do and takes less then an hour per side. Prices run about $100 for the valve from Courtesy Nissan. [ Note: Read Jim Klubens' section below on rebuilding the valves instead of replacing them, Ed. ] The AIV function, as described in the manual, is to send secondary air to the exhaust manifold using a vacuum created by exhaust pulsation in the exhaust manifold. When the exhaust pressure is below atmospheric pressure, secondary air is sent to the exhaust manifold. When the exhaust pressure is above atmospheric pressure, the reed valves prevent secondary air form being sent back to the sub-air cleaner. I've heard that de-acceleration is supposed to keep the assembly clear of water."

:)

Got my AIV sorted by Jeff, Firstly he drained out the water retained in the AIV's dried the sponge type thing (no idea what it is) he drilled a small 'drain' hole at the lowest point and that was the end of my 'Gurgling' problems!

Still no gurgling at idle (mostly when problem occured)

Timmy Turbo,

I reckon this is what you're 'rattling' is.

Do the Series II's have AIV's ? I know that mine had none of the re-circ piping on the front exhaust sections ...

Andy - My understanding was that they removed the AIV's in 1993, but perhaps it was a SII thing

Matty (Jeff?) - where is the hole drilled? Surely, given that the AIVs are an interface between the exhaust and the inlet system, any hole will either be an exhaust leak, or an intake leak??

Az,

Erm...................Leave me alone I am pooly bad...

So now I have a leak?? wink.gif

Just wondering really.. Trying to picture where said hole would be drilled..

Oops this is the technical forum isn't it..

i drilled a hole in the lowest point of my filter housings as well.

cured the problem for ages, although it has come back now (after 2 years)

aaron, the hole is so small, that if onthe exhaust side, it would make bugger all difference

however, i see your point if on the intake side. i think the actual filter itself almost covers the hole anyway, so it does act purely as a drain

i'll try and listen next time i have the trim off.... wink.gif

See Az.....(sticks tongue out)

Cheers Craig!!
