i have decided to go down the auto to manual conversion - are there things to check on a manual gearbox to ensure that it is a desent box - i realise that it would mostly be luck of the draw but i would like this to be the last box if poss (misses will go mental)

Good choice mate, don't blame. Nobody can say that you haven't given the auto option a good try.

given that the average manual g box will be approaching 20years old and a TT box will have had around 280 bhp shoved thru it for all of that time its not realistic to give any guarantees or warranties. You might get an import box from a later car with only 50000 miles on it or you might get a box from an early UK breaker with over 100000 miles on it.

ALL of them are going to be worn to some degree. Fact.

The only way to be half sure is to remove the bellhousing for a visual inspection of teeth and synchro cones etc.

Or if possible look at buying a doner car that is in running condition then you can test the box and see how good or bad it is.

Or buy a gearbox like I did from a guys garage just of the M1 that had a huge great story behind it LOL ;)

or like me ya get one that started to crunch a few weeks after fitting it :( just another thing to take to bits and make better :)

A mate of mine in Wrexham is selling one that is still in the car (minor front end crash) but it still moves so you could try before you buy?

Its a complete setup including an uprated clutch.

He's ready to sell it anytime really, still on the car but only a day to get it off at his place.

Hi John,

many thanks for the running around - without digging around for all items required will he be able to include evreything incl all bolts - centre console bits and gaiters etc - could he give me an indication to the age mileage of the clutch and is it ok for a courier pickup - the most important thing is how does he want paying - do you want me to call him or do you want the sale and communication to continue through you

thanks again

dave

Hi Dave,

Prob best to call him, he can have the whole lot shipped to you cheap as he runs an exhaust business so gets good deals on carriage.

He has all the parts including trim.

Its Leon, 07811196727

Cheers
