I have my old saxo sat on the drive and i need to shift it, but at the moment the car has no tax and is not insured. Is it legal to tow the car on a solid towing bar without tax and insurance? It needs to be towed about 5-10miles to a friends lock-up.

Any advice and help would be greatfully recieved, i'm desperate to move it so i can get it fixed and sold.

Thats what i thought, but i dont want to risk having it siezed, i cant afford a fine and/or points and i cant afford to let the car be crushed

I know that a rope tow would be illegal, but would imagine that a solid purpose built item should be OK.

Best way would be to pop into your local plod office and just ask them!

get a motortrade mate with some trade plates to sit in there and steer it, if possible

i thought i heard a long time ago that it needed to be insured, but have never found out, i got a motorbike took off me years ago because you cannot push it along the pavement or road without insurance, even if you dont have the keys for it! I'm just thinking, what if someone runs into it, god forbid, but ya know where i'm coming from...

From what i understand if the car you are towing is not taxed, mot'd or insured you must not tow it with the wheels on the ground.

Even if it's on a 2 wheel trolley you need to have it off the ground unfortunately buddy.

yeah, car must be insured if it's towed, only option is a trailer, think you could prob get someone with a trailer to do it for 20 squid if there's one local

That's what I thought too Rob.

If a car is not taxed or insured then it must not be placed upon the public highway except for travel to/from a pre-booked MOT. Towing is the same as using/parking on the public road. However you can transport an untaxed/uninsured car on a transporter; ie not touching the road at all.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

The car would have to be trailered to be moved on the public highway, unless it was going to a prebooked mot
