Hey folks im just looking at the above car its an import in 1995 twin turbo manual. Was after pointers of common faults to look out for as im sure there is a few people on here that have had them or have got them.

Im a mechanic so you dont need to break it right down i was just after common problems.

Oh i do now that the active spoiler light is coming on but it isnt working if anyone had any clues on this and the passenger window isnt woring probably but i am more than capable of sorting the window :)

Thanks for the help

Marty

the manuals have chocolate gearboxes..... lol....

no seriously check the transmission and be prepared to do work on it.

got a mate who had one.... (blown box) and another mate really intetesed but changed his mind at the last minute because of the box.... (he went for a Soarer with the 2.5 1JZ-GTE)

My mate made up an extensive checklist document.... might be able to get one for you... he might want a couple of quid though....lol...

i could PM you his email address if your interested.

Ah ive been looking at a soarer too. Its completely standard from what i have seen and on 98k miles which some of them are miles so does seem to be quite good. Maybe i have found a good deal gonna go interrogate him :)

its 3 litre twin turbo just been and had a look at it but the guy had just popped out. It needs a good clean but looks like an older sensible person that drives it so hopefully not been thrashed.

The local car wash place near me is very good for 50 quid and will polish and hover and all sorts so could get it looking new. There is no mods on it what so ever got standard alloys on it and all. Was imported in 95 so hasnt had all our salt over it for many years.

He wants a grand after a guy from Scotland offered him a grand and then realised that it wasnt Royston near Barnsley. Will have to start to negotiate only wanted to pay out 800.

ive owned my GTO for the last 4 years, highly modified daily driver and 500 bhp and loving every single minute of it, like any car serviced well and they will last.

From what i have found difference between JDM GTO and UK 3000GT is the turbos with the JDM one having smaller tubs. Obviously spool up times are gonna be different does that mean different powers as well?

From what bit I know the Mk2 GTO (the one without pop ups) has a 6 speed box and if you get the MR version comes with a standard 320bhp instead of 280!

The 6 speed box is supposed to be much stronger than the old 5 speed so hunt down a good Mk2 and if you can get the MR.

The MR does away with some things like the auto adjusting front and rear spoilers, electronically adjustable suspension and changable exhaust tone! It is the more focused light weight model (still heavy mind), but IMO less to go wrong is better with cars like this. It still has air con, electrics seats etc. The suspension is usually TEIN coil overs as standard on the MR instead of the electrically adjustable soft/hard standard variant.

I know this because my pal has a 95 MR and I did some research at the time to help him choose a good one.

The MR is still 4 wheel drive, but not 4 wheel steer (no loss IMO). I am always impressed with it when I have a ride, very quick, competent car.

If I didn't have the Zed would certainly consider one of these.

I was looking at a GTO as a second car as my main money is being focused on my other zed so i will looking at a mk1 and saw that the tubs are different between UK and JDM

Just put a deposit down on a GTO took the buyers guide with me and was a very genuine guy. The car checks out fine with no turbo issues and a couple of faults that will be quite easy to sort and we dealed on £1000. I know that people that are aware will find this very cheap however the car checked out fine and this is a genuine bargin so im very chuffed with myself. Couldnt see me driving about in an economical car anyway :)

Yes, I had a Mk1 TT and confirm that they are a great car to drive, really quick for a heavy car and solid and I loved it, However they have the worst transmissions of any Jap sports coupe (and interiors), Getrag boxes are rubbish (both 5 and later 6 speed versions have syncro issues and the transfer boxes and output shafts just fall to bits. they would have made a far better car if they hadnt tried to be so clever and just made the car a rear wheel drive with an inline engine and gearbox and it would have been easier to work on.

But I've Digressed. with regards your rear spoiler problem. the "active aero" pack fitted to the GTO comprised the front AND rear spoiler but the front spoiler is often removed as it grounds when lowered. firstly you can check the rear spoiler lift mechanism by pressing and holding the active aero switch with the engine running and the spoiler should lift. if this is o.k. then you will need to jack up the front and check the front spoiler mechanism.

There are limit switches in the front servo motor that must make to give a signal back to the aero system to make the rear aero lift. Often this unit is either unpluged to halt the mechanism and stop the front aero lowering or the front aero is removed. Or the limit switches are fooked. Afraid its a grovel on the floor job to see whats gone on..........Good luck.
