As some of you may know my dad had a GTO a while back but gave up because it had problems as usual lol!

Anyway hes going to go and look at a 1988 Toyota Supra Auto twin turbo. I was just wandering if any one had owned one before or new any thing to look out for when buying? It has mot etc but needs tidying up which is what most people put in adverts :)

Hes a mechanic by trade so knows most things but just wandered what people thought.

Also is the twin turbo an import?

Cheers for any advice :duffer:

As far as I know... yes it is an import....

so this 1988 import twint turbo.... ...

is it the 2L or the 2.5L? and an 88 will be the MKiii pre facelift.... or could be just on the turn.....to facelift.

I can give you the link to the Mkiii forum.....

if it's the 2L I think they are a bit underpowered.... the best Mkiii's are the later ones with the 2.5 twin... really good engin.. (1JZ-GTE)

most other Mkiii engines are crap and take a lot of looking after.

hi if you need any advice i can help i have had many including the rare 2.0 tt

i alkso have my p reg up for sale tt

So if its an import it should have less rust problems and according to the seller the back lights are nicer. It is the 2L twin so are they a bit crap?

I always thought all supras were 3L turbo or non turbo lol!

Scatrat was your 2.0 tt any good? any problems and did you think it was fast or slow?

Oh and look out for RUST..... under tail gate rubber and right up under the rear wheel arch... really nasty... cost a fortune to fix.

rusty water marks in the boot around the wheel arches is a dead giveaway.... (yeah lift up the carpet).

the tail gates also leak a lot so check in the spare wheel well make sure that's not rusted.

the tank straps underneath go as well and more importantly the petrol filler neck, check for leaks, should be able to see some of it from under the car with a torch they tend to go where they meet the tank.

check the rad (make sure its not too old) and make sure the water is flowing well as the rads tend to clog up.

my 2.0 tt was amazing quik,

but didnt want to be boosted up more than what it already was uses the celica engine, had no faults at all, leaking rear window,

parts were easy from a breaker and is a forum dedicated to that model, rads etc very easy to get hold of.

box very good,

as medalion man says chck boot by the wheel and an old thing with them is blocked gulleys by the scuttle plate. good for 200000k easy with love

you'll be lucky to get 250bhp with work ...... but it's a better engin than the 3L.... junk!!!

awwwh you Biatch lol

but 250 is the limit yes sound good and cars very light

Is the engine from a celica gt4 with an extra turbo minus the 4wd? My dad wanted one of these when they were new so he likes them and he wants it to be fast but reliable so could be a good option. Are parts interchangeable from a uk car to the import?

All good advice as my dad is tight with money in a good way lol! Just don't want him to buy a nail that on the surface looks good. Comes with full exhaust, dump valves, new turbo, leather interior, 17 inch alloys and all electric and not to far to travel.

He will only travel 20-30 miles which narrows the field lol!

Is the engine from a celica gt4 with an extra turbo minus the 4wd?

NO... that is a 4 cyl.... the MKiii is a 6 cyl totally different engin.... Yamaha head.

That is nice m8 :thumbup1: He would buy it if you only wanted £1500 lol! Every car I show him he says " can't you get them for less than a £1000" NO YOU CAN'T :headvswal He saw a mazda rx7 today and I was like "more than £1500 if you wan't it working"

Well he is having a look at this supra tomorrow or saturday so we will see what its like

Cheers

The supra was a nail lol!

Rusty, lcd speedo cluster wasn't working and auto box was on the way out. Makes you wander why people don't tell you these things on the phone like your not going to notice.

On the plus side the car was nice on the outside and my dad liked the look. Will keep looking and cheers for the info guys

ive had 7 mkiii s including the 2.0tt 3.0t and a 2.5tt if you want any advice fella drop me a pm ive worked on them all and built many of them with guys on the mkiii forum, if i had my choice id go 2.5 but the 2.0 is quick when modded but had very little torque as standard.

good luck with the search
