hey everyone, sorry for asking a question that has probly been asked many times before. i am going to change the cam belt on my z, but i keep reading different things about what i actually need. some places ive read its just the belt, and some it seems like allmost everything, all pulleys, water pump etc.

mine has done 95K miles. what do you all reccomend?? cheers in advance guys :-)

really if you can afford it its best to change the lot. the water pump isent driven off of the timing but whilst you have the car in bits its best to just check it over for leaks etc. if you cant budget all new pullys and stuff just strip timing down and check all the bearings out for play or any noise etc. if all seems ok then chances are they are ok and you might get away with not changing it. but its your choice as if you dont change it and 1 fails it will cost you a lot more to repair.

Pretty much what he said.....

.......if you know the belt was done not so long ago and the water pump etc were replaced at the same time, then fine.

But if you don't know the history, it's definitely best to have the water pump and idler pulley replaced at the same time! It's not the parts that kill you, it's the labour cost - so whilst you have the front of the engine off it's best to do the lot all together.

And make sure you have the two small hoses at the front replaced as well - these will inevitably fail about a month after you've had the job done otherwise.....

PS I was wrong about the idler pulley not being expensive - that part is.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

What you have to remember is the car & components on it are around 20 years old! the timing belt is a 60k or 5 year service item. Most recommend the pulleys, tensioner, water pump etc are done at 120k or 10 years - its no good having a brand new timing belt if a 20 year old idler pulley fails!!

I done the lot at 120k on mine & would say it is a very good idea, even more so as these vehicles get older :)

This will give you some idea as to what is involved.......

Which is this lot....

I'd also recommend replacing this lot as well while you are taking things apart.... Which is the Injector harnesses, the Temp sender and the temp sender harness, along with (but not pictured) the Coil Pack connectors.

Agree with this although my car has an extensive service file, I couldn't find any reference to the tensioners being done, so while the belt is going to be replaced although only done 8k miles ago (4yrs ago) the tensioners are being replaced as if they haven't been done in the last 16 years I am sure they will need doing now.

I have used CZP a few times now and the service is top class.

For example, I made an order last monday night and Fedex attempted delivery on Friday morning! I picked up from local depot on Saturday.

Shipping costs are very reasonable.:)
