Marc's selling his Celica and not planning on getting another car til he needs one when he starts uni in January which means my only access to a car is my Zed. I planned to SORN it when the tax runs out end of October as I wouldn't want to drive it in the bad weather plus in all honesty it is just a toy car, I could never afford to run it as a daily driver. As it is I walk to work most days as I'm skint lol.

Anyway, I will still need a car, because of work/childcare issues - not to mention that without a car I am severely limited to what I can do and where I can go with my daughter.

So it looks like my only option is going to be to sell my Zed, before October so its still got road tax. Will get my headlights issue resolved after pay day and then I think I am going to have to sell my gorgeous gorgeous yello zed :thumbdown::thumbdown::thumbdown::thumbdown::thumbdown:

I take it you cant claim milage for your driving for work then? Seeing that its different each day and all that.

No the meagre bursary is supposed to cover the costs. Having said that, the meagre bursary is still going to leave me slightly better off than my pathetic part time medical secretary's salary!

Its good to talk about it you are amongst friends here and will get plently of advice, dont rush into anything take your time and do what is best for you. I have seen this happen a lot these cars are easy to buy but very expensive to keep a lot of us have second cars to keep running costs down, good luck Janus:clover:

How much do you pay for your insurance?

If your on a 'normal' policy paying a crazy premium then getting a £300 banger as suggested may be more economical, once you have a 'normal' policy on another car you then qualify for classic insurance on the zed for £200-300, if you are paying over a grand for insurance at the moment like some folk on here then you could actually end up saving money out of it - keep it keep it keep it :hammer:

now that is a good idea

Sorry to hear that Jane - hopefully the few suggestions given will help out as it'd be a shame to get rid of your car. It looks a nice example from the pics you have posted.

.......Moderators feel free to delete this if people think this is a for sale post.

And not necessary at the mo either - I reckon StellaZ has made the point quite clear to everyone; but they are watching.......

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Insured with Lynbrook, already v cheap!!

I'm gutted to see this thread..

I was showing my missus your car just the other day, we both agreed it was a belter and my girlfriend can't stand mine (she says I love it more than her - thats simply not true - I love it much, much more than her!)

Joking aside, your circumstances do sound pretty conspired against you keeping the Zed - but I'm pleased to see you have your priorities in order (your daughter). Like others have said though, consider your options carefully befor making your decision. Just to clarify the fuel issue though - you would be able to claim some of the money back for your mileage. Its been a while since I did it myself but I believe its something like 17.5 % of £0.40p/mile for first 10,000 miles and £0.25p/mile thereafter. I'm sure someone on here will know exactly.

If all else fails and you do have to sell, i'm pretty sure you would get at least 3k for your motor which you could then re-invest into something a little more affordable, but as Micheal Knight said, all cars cost money to run and may not be much cheaper in the long run. Is there anyone you know who would buy your car and then sell it back to you at a later date (family member or such like).

Really hope you find a way of sorting it.

Best of luck

Lol, thanks - still not entirely sure what to do - so am not going to do anything for the interim and give it some thought. Its very tempting to sell my Zed, get a runabout and keep back a chunk of money to invest in a zed at a later date or wait for one to come up on here. But like you said, my daughter is my priority and I will not see her miss out in visiting friends, family, having days out etc because of my selfishness in wanting to keep a car I can't afford to run (not to mention the practical issues!)

Second job definitely not an option, I don't have any family locally and I struggle with childcare and I would not want to spend any less time with my daughter than I already do. As for mileage claims, at the moment I walk to work as I live fairly locally (and its free exercise!) but when I start my nurse training any travel costs are incorporated into the bursary and this is made very clear at interview, that you are expected to get yourself to all your placements and pay for this from the bursary.

So at the moment I still don't know. I LOVE my Zed, it is without a doubt the most gorgeous, head turning, stunning car. I don't care that she's 18yrs old and doesn't have a turbo, to be honest, she is still fast and I get a huge thrill from driving her. Like I said before, my car is my hobby, I enjoy so many aspects of owning it. I would hate to not attend meets, go for drives out (even if I do only take her out once or twice a week max) and generally lose my obsession!! I don't get much of a social life, so the zed pretty much is what I do when I'm not working or looking after Tasha.

Sigh.

Just need to make a big decision. Wish I could just magic £500 out the air to get myself a cheap runabout then I don't have to rely on anyone for anything then!

If anyone has a spare magic wand, please let me know lol

thanks guys

Jane xx

unwanted advice

Sorry to hear about your difficult predicament.

Would Marc not lend you £500 for a runabout? Since he doesnt have any plans to get another car until january, wouldnt he lend you it and you could pay him back before he needs it? He'd only end up spending the money on rubbish anyway :p

No, thats not an option but thanks

J

If you need to sell it, then its got to go! its unfortunate but its life... good luck with the sale. I hate being in the position where you need to sell things but from time to time it has to happen.

At the end of the day it is a bit of metal, and lets face it you can always buy another one.
