Check for rust. Even if it's had welding. There are plenty of Zs out there with good bodies (although these are becoming more of a rarity), so don't plump for anything less. They rust around the back of the sills, the floor, the rear aches and the area below the filler cap.

Also look inside the boot as they rust right on the very edge of the lip on the inside. Check for leaking main seals (around the front of the gearbox).

If it smokes, it could be from a number of things. If it smokes on idle (blue or white) then it'll be turbos. If it smokes on rundown, then that'll be pistons. Intermittent smoking could be PCV related.

You've mentioned the fan kicking in. The viscous van should engage from cold start immediately. That's the way to check if the viscous fan is working. Then also run to temp for electric rad fan.

I wouldn't be so concerned with ECU fault codes as I would be for anything else. Faulty sensors and dirty contacts are very common in Z32s and aren't too much of a problem to rectify.

There's a diagnostics switch on the ECU which is sited beneath the kick plate on the passenger side. You need to turn this on so that the ECU can give you the codes on the dash.

Here's a link to a how2 ---> http://www.ttzd.com/tech/diagnostic/diagnostic.html

Also check for seat bolster wear, pedal rubber wear, shifter wear....that indicates a high miler.
