Right, also.. according to the manual the radiator should onlt need filling if the overflow is empty. Can I assume this is unless the radiator has a hole in it ? As the radiator is half empty (that'll be the hole), but there is still water in the overflow.....

If it's leaking you should see it (steam or coolant under the car after parking).

Maybe there's just some air in the system or there's something wrong with the radiator-cap, which should basically work like a pressure valve to let air out of the radiator.

It is leaking. I can see it, it's poriing out the offside front of the radiator (read other posts). I just though that you'd expect the overflow to be empty as the radiator drained through the hole. It appears that it doesn't.

God knows what caused the hole though, it's totally uncorroded (isn't it ali anyway?). That's what made me think it's burst through pressure (of steam being formed) by the engine beginning to overheat because the front fan isn't turning (if it is indeed supposed to turn all the time...)

As you say, maybe it's the radiator cap... I mean as well as the front fan, that caused it. Someone earlier on the forum says they solved their problems with a new cap.. so does this make sense:

1) for some reason front fan stops working or doesn't start working when it should (in traffic, etc).

2) water begins to boil, but cap doesn't let steam escape.

3)pressure blows hole in radiator

result: prob need new radiator, and fuse/fan... how much does a radiator cost ? Probably a pigging fortune. bugger.
