I've got a 1989 jspec TT and wanted to change the front and rear speakers. I've looked at a few threads and it seems that 6.5 inch speakers should fit in the doors. I wanted to check if this is definately the case as I've measured the cover and it's only 8"x5.5". I didn't want to take the door trim off till i'd ordered and got the new ones.

Thanks in advance.

well yes and no, i got some FLI 13cm which is like 5.1" or somin but they didnt quite fit or match up to the holes, so i just Re-drilled the holes and screwed them in, they aint going no where and the clarity difference is very good my front speakers were standards and s**t so for like £30 well worth it.

The door car themselves aint too hard to get on and off once done it once or twice just look in the how-to section or use search.

however for rear speakers for the time being i got 6x9's which wont fit in the standard positions even if you lower them into the spaces due to the fuel tank, so for now i made a little MDF board and covered it with some black material cut the holes for the speakers and away i went. :batman:

Hollings.

theres a few threads on here at the mo about speakers . to get your speakers in you gotta take off the door cards . if you have a bose system box in the door scrap it and make up a panel with mdf to cover the hole left . this bit comes from experience . take the front section of the bose box off and refit , drop the window and measure the gap from the front of the panel to your glass . im sure i fitted 73mm deep speakers but cant be 100% . the deeper you can fit the better . 6.5 is the best choice and are a bit shallower than 6x9,s . to be honest there are nt any plug and play options for the front as the original boxes are a strange shape and size . its well worth the 2-3 hours as the improvement is immeasureable . as for the rears 6x9,s are too deep . 6.5 are again the way to go

good luck with your build .

if you have any probs pm me and i,ll try to help

Thanks for the reply guys. My rears are 6x4's, so I don't think I've got the bose setup. I'll probably get 6.5" for the front and some 6x4's for the rear.

i tried the other week to fit some 6.5's in the doors, the ones i got were to deep to fit in the door, so i had to cut the door card and fit them on the outside, this obviously left a gap due to the 8 x 5.5 cover which left some bare metal exposed. i ended up making a seal out of some rubber gasket material and then covering the join with some 6x9 covers. i'd post some pics up but i can't seem to find my cable. i'll have a look later on.

Thanks, it would be good to see your solution. Was the sound good once they were finished?

the sound was better, i fitted some tweeters in the vents aswell. but it still needs a sub.

i still can't find the cable for my phone but i'll have a good look now.

It doesn't look perfect, but i really didn't want to start cutting bits of the metal framework out to fit the 6.5's or to fit some 6x9's in the doors. (i have seen the latter achieved, and the result does look good)

I got some shots of the door speakers with the gap covers on for you to have a look at

I didn't want to do anything that changed the car from standard, so I fitted 16 cm fronts and 6"x4" rears in the end. I used a sub in an MDF boot floor, that came with the car. I powered it using an amp under the boot floor where the jack usually goes.

It sounds good enough for me as I'm not into "big" sound systems, although I'm sure it would sound better with some bigger door speakers.

An MDF boot floor and an amp where the jack usually goes is not exactly standard. Sound systems don't have to be " BIG " for clarity. Speaker choice ( sometimes placement ) and correct installation will improve your in car sound a lot. You cannot hear much on the outside of my car , even at high volume, but i made sure that the " sweet spot " is exactly where it needs to be for both front seats.

Not getting at your " standard " point but sometimes do we not have to make enhancements to the original to get better performance / service?...........dipped headlamps , exhausts, suspension ,re-upholstered seats etc

My older brothers and i are always having this debate as they are VERY old school.

No disrespect to them or yourself but if Nissan were to re-design this car do you not think that they would make improvements on the original?

I'm not averse to mods as long as they're tastefull and I can appreciate heavily modded cars. I've always kept my cars looking fairly standard. I did it this way as I already had the amp, sub and boot floor, so it didn't cost much and can easily be returned to standard. I hid the amp as I wanted to retain the use of most of the boot. I've no doubt your setup would sound better, but mine is good enough for my Iron Maiden collection! :)

Point taken ashleydc

As i said, no disrespect to your own personal taste. Maybe i'm a little bit biased as i used to design and build recording studios, where sound quality and isolation is utmost.

even my wife is sick of my repositioning speakers around the living room for the " perfect " surround sound.

I get defensive sometimes when people mistake my view of " Quality Sound " with youngsters bursting your eardrums at the stoplights, or cars you can hear before and after they arrive.

As i know nothing about mechanics, audio systems is all i know about and it gives me something to feel manly about like " strippin down a head ".

What it boils down to is, are you happy with what you've got and nothing else. Funnily enough i rarely turn music on while i'm driving as i'm constantly listening to the engine for faults.............or how sweet it sounds.

There are a few rare moments when the sun is out , the roof is off and your favourite singer/group is in the background ( no matter how they sound ) where you just feel like you're in the clouds......That's what it's all about.....i suppose.
