Hi all,

I've currently got the boot totally empty as im working on something else, but whilst I'm here I was thinking about the rear speakers.

It does have a titchy set of ovals (4x6??) at the moment, and I can understand why, as the space is very limited with the current speaker bracket.

So I was just wondering what people had done to over come this, are there brackets I can just buy and fit to enable a 6x9 set up lower down for example, or have people made their own boxes/brackets?

Photos please!

Cheers

I see, well im pretty much there already, the 4x6's I have look pretty good, a big coil and thick coil wiring sou should take some watts, but if I could replace them with a set of 6x9's I'd be much happier with the bigger sound.

Cheers

I think the general rule is spend more money on the front speakers and don't bother with the rears. Its something to do with the boot size or shape and the sound quality gets changed fu** it I don't know lol! Someone will explain it better lol!

If you want bigger speakers its normally a custom job as like you say only 4x6 fit. I fitted alpine in the front and then changed the back at a later date and didn't notice any difference.

I must say the front does sound pretty good, i havent had a look yet.

but as im sure you can all imagine the little 4x6's just lack a little.. I really like my prodigy, and loud, and clear, and im afraid the little ones just dont give enough for me

Lol, am probs gonna do the same - I HATE not being able to listen to music in the Zed.

i bought a set of brackets which had been modified and still fit in normally but allowing for bigger speakers to be used (not quite as big as 6x9s but definately an improvement over the little ones that were in there.)

I would agree with above though, get yourself some decent front speakers and you will be fine.

I will post some pics later on,

6x9 are generally too deep . stick some really good quality 6.5 components in the front and some good quality 6.5 in the rear. avoid 6x9 as the sound they produce is inferior . the best ice upgrade you can do is a sub in the boot.

keep looking on ebay for a set of focal k1,s . will work superb in the back with a sub and for the front again go focal or audiobahn components . avoid entry level stuff . with focal look for polyglass .

if you are sitting comfortably check out focal utopia . take a deep breath before you look at the price

Would'nt bother with rear speakers. Just get decent component fronts for your mid's and high's , and an amplified subwoofer for bass.

Hmmmm ok then, well, what have people done to fit their 6.5's?

I'm not liking the idea of just having nothing there, I have always had my music coming mainly from the rear in my cars in the past, I don't know why, it just sounded better to me..?

As for a subwoofer.. I've always felt that they take up too much space.. I suppose a smaller one wouldn't do any harm.. There was one on the parcel shelf thingy, but I didn't like that it was on show.. So it's now In my hallway at home waiting for me to make a decision on it's future..

Cheers for comments so far, I still have no pictures of anyones interesting set ups!!

That's cheating!

You've got no boot at all, just one big speaker box! :gunsmilie:

But I think that's probably the best way forward. Decent speakers in the front (6x9's or 6's) and a stand alone sub enclosure in the boot. I know you said you don't like the boom boxes, but in terms of sheer performance (I'm humming the prodigy's entire catalogue now..), nothing will touch it. In my experience I very rarely put anything in the boot, but at least if you need to you can just whip it out and hey presto - you can put at least 4 or 5 envelopes in there (lying flat, obviously).

Or you go down the above route and actually make something yourself. Just depends how much effort you want to go to really.

Good luck

You can fit a couple of 10" subs in the boot with a stealth type setup and still remain most of your boot space.

The LWB effectively has a false floor in the boot, giving you a lot more depth then first perceived, and the SWB had an even deeper boot.

Hi Leo

The shelf lifts up to reveal ample boot space for a £120 trip to Tesco supermarket, i also have my wife up front and two kids in the back so no cheating there .The photo doesn't show this but the backs of the speakers are enclosed, this is why the amp is up top. There is no need for a sub as the enclosed boot and speakers give enough resonance to create the sub harmonics ( bass without noise ) needed.

The front of the parcel shelf sits just below the ( roller blind ) boot cover , and the back sits on brackets fitted to the side trim in the boot. The whole lot sit on a layer of memory foam and there is a hand grab for ease of lifting and removal if ness. In the beginning i did sit the back end on legs but they got in the way of the shopping ( my wife's favorite hobby ) The parcel shelf is cut from 1" MDF and upholstered in black faux suede. When the blind is pulled you can see nothing ....even from the sides. No screws hold the shelf in place as the memory foam creates a non slip/bounce cradle. i can send you some more pics if you want.

I'm using infinity speakers in the front and re-run some decent ( oxygen free ) speaker cables from the head unit to the doors. In the back there are also a pair of infinities backed with 10mm ply and ported. The size of these are important to get the correct sound. The head unit is Alpine, but any decent head unit that gives you control of the bass placement will work well.

Prodigy rocks here also Remember The Shamen?

Take care buddy

Thats doublely awesome then!

Looks smart, good sound and practical to boot (make that triplely awesome)!

I wasn't even worried about my ice yet as I have other more pressing issues, but rest assured when I do get round to it I'll be following a similar tack. Good job Kr1s.

There you go Sky - problem sorted, all you need is a jigsaw, some MDF a bit of time and effort.

I had acoustic parcel shelves (very similar to Kr1s' effort) made by professional ICE centres (for an old pug and sierra) and did feel a bit ripped off afterwards. But the weighty MDF does give a solid platform for the speakers to work against. The last thing you want is for it to sound like a biscuit tin with a hand grenade in!

Good luck with it..:punk:

Hi all,

That has been very useful!

Thanks for your ideas!

I'll probably crack on with something later next week maybe

Kr1s, more photos of what you've done would be appreciated :)

cheers

Hi

You will see that i had to install some risers in the doors to accommodate the depth of the infinities. They are only about an inch tall and the grill just clears the rubber door seal.

There is no contact with the legs and the grills. There is some dyna-mat inside the door cavity but acoustic foam would be just as good. The speakers have tweeters built in that allow you to angle them in the direction that gives you the best clarity without hissing. I have since made two upholstered covers that are screwed over the remaining gap to cover up the ugly, i'll put the pics up tomorrow.

Oh! yeah , there are two super tweeters ( pioneer with in-line crossovers ) in the back and the two speakers are now covered by two 10" sub-grills.

This was my third attempt. There is a large hole below the amp to allow air to pass over and under it to keep it cool while the sun is blazing. and the cables just drop through.

I have also felt ripped off by so called specialist audio installers in the past now i know how to use a router and a jigsaw.

gimme a shout if you need a hand, i have loads of cables etc left over from other fittings i've done in the past.
