its like when i come to a hill say in 5th and put my foot down under load it starts when change down to 3rd and give it some beans it stops?

Need some more info first:

UK or Jap spec?

Turbo or N/A ?

Does it make the noise your calling pinking (det) under load / off load or all of the time?

Did the garage who changed the belt check / adjust the timing correctly after they fitted the belt?

Are you running standard or tuned set up is so what boost level.( if turbo)
