Emerald stand alone engine management system on a Z32 is now a viable and working reality.

All due to some research and experience by John Dixon following on from his successful installation of an Emerald system on his Nissan V8 engine. This also stems from my desire to move away from older generation fixed map ECUs and the neccessity of new chips with everything. So I bought all the gear with johns technical advice. John has made an adaptor loom which allows the use of the stock loom and ECU plug. He has also modified the Crank angle sensor(CAS) unit to accept a modified disc to allow the Emerald ECU to read it.

Today was test n try day!

First of all John helped identfy a couple of issues with the old stock loom/connectors which was stopping the engine firing. Once all was well on Nissan ECU we swapped over to the Emerald.

Almost immediatley it fired up:thumbup1: on a base map supplied. John then spent some time getting things running evenly and by 3 0clock today we had a fully running NA engine controlled by Emerald management.

I helped by making lots of coffee and bacon butties:lol:

To say I am happy is todays understatement.:nana2:

I will post up some pics when I tidy up the install.

No more MAFs for me!!!!

So its a huge thanks to John for a top job.:bow:

Soon we hope to be able to market this as a true plug n play system.

I now have two choices. Get the stock engine fully mapped at Emerald on Dave Walkers rolling road and get the car finished and MOTd or proceed to install the new high power engine first and then get it mapped,MOTd etc

This is great news Pete,This is great for the uk tuning scene and proves the states dont have the monoply on 300zx tuning. This is great for people wanting to run custom set ups and offers an alternative To Aem etc.Congrats to You and John for battling through and getting this from the drawing board to the road.

Thats great news. John is going to be setting mine up in the near future, maybe Emerald is the way forward for me. Will have a chat to John to see what he says.

Barry

well Im a bit biased but IMO Emerald is a good way forward.

Check out the Emerald web site for a run down of what the system does.

Im not good at lap tops and diagnostics but I can see lots of useful features/checks which even I might be able to cope with.

Switchable maps(3) just toggle the switch. Full throttle shifting. Launch control etc etc

Alter mixture, timing idle etc .

I know john is keen to get a TT set up organixed next.

Give him a call

I have been following dave walkers work for many years now, if there was one person in the uk i would trust in mapping an engine it would be him. i would have thought the advantages on even a relativly stock tt would be substantial. when you take into account the boost control facilities etc this would be great value

And Me too. I have known about him for years.

i recently was present at a mapping session in his Rolling road room.

Top bloke:bow::bow:

im not sure whether to go and get this stock engine mapped or get on with fitting my new uprated engine and then go for a mapping session.:cool2:

Must say, was great to finally get this running. The stuff has been sitting in my office for about 3 months.

As Pete says, we're going to do this as a full conversion if anyone is interested. Its a hell of a good system and very affordable too, I've used them since I used to do 205's and wouldn't swap to anything else. I totally agree with the praise for Dave too, he's as good as it gets, trust me, infact one of the best benefits of the system is the fixed-price mapping service emerald do, it's as cheap as I can get the dyno time alone!

The system we're offering is a plug and play solution which requires no external wiring for basic functions and is also completely reversible if you want to sell the car on. If you don't want to use the stock loom because of age then a custom loom can of course be made up.

Basic System will be:

Emerald K6 ECU (brand new model)

Conversion loom that plugs into stock ECU plug

Relevant sensors

Switch for changing maps

Modified CAS (exchange) chromed an option for you blingers

MAP Sensor for TT

Specific Z32 Installation manual

Extra's:

Boost control solenoid (get rid of the aftermarket controller and use the K6)

Wideband lambda for closed loop fuel control

Optional display for wideband.

Installation service

The ECU has great features including 3 switchable maps, variable boost control, adjustable traction control, full throttle shift, plenty of extra outputs for NOS, exhaust bypass etc. etc.

Any questions then drop Pete or myself a line!

Baz, for your setup then this probably is a better bet. Give me a call and I can talk you through the pro's/cons of each option vs re-mapped stock ECU.

That is a VERY good price

Yeah, I thought so too.

That's until the VAT rise though, can't do much about that!

hmmm so running maf-less means you could get rid of all the pipe work before the turbos and get to hear the turbo's spool up instead of it being muffled? how much for a fully fitted and mapped kit?

Yes, as long as you can find somewhere to fit the filters. At the minimum you can get rid of the tee piece and loose the pressure drop through that.

Price of the kit is as above, exact price to be confirmed but ~£1000. Emerald's mapping service is £275 + VAT last time I looked.

And similarly on my NA. There is room either side of my Koyo rad to get through from the engine bay. So I should be able to run virtually straight inlet tracts from twin filters right up to the throttle bodies instead of going thru the T piece and round the houses under the headlights.

£1000 fitted?!!

Fitting not included.

Its very straightforward.

What you need to keep in mind tho is once fitted The ECU will need setting up on a rolling road.

At the moment all we have is a base map for an NA. It starts the car and runs/revs in my garage. I will probably trailer the car to Emerald to get it set up.

John has no data at present for a TT set up but this is something he is looking in to. Once it is installed on one TT and mapped it will be easier for others.

Straightforward and wiring does not compute with me, the closest av got to an engine/management conversion was my lasses e36 beemer, literally unplugged the wiring loom from a connector on the inner wing, plugged the new one in, snipped and joined the immobiliser wires under the dash and vroom!

If you could manage that then you'll be able to fit this, its a straight plug in job with one wire needed on the fuel pump controller.

As Pete says, biggest problem at the minute is not having a base map for a TT, once we have one to supply with the unit then it will run OK as soon as fitted so you can drive it to a dyno for mapping.

Well it looks like we have a TT Emerald car coming soon. Or maybe two:scared:

Work to commence on this soon.

John is going to do most of the install for the owner so we can get the car rolling roaded and establish a known working base map for others to use.

Its a forum member too so once its up and running you will probably get some pics and figures. Needs to remain confidential for now tho. im sure the owner will make himself known when its on the go.

I simply cant find anytime to progress my own NA install ATM due to "other work"

Basic kit prices are in the area we first mentioned. NA just under £1000. TT just over.

I am on the list and all paid up.... I am removing my all singing all dancing AEM unit in favour of one of these. I would rather have John fit and base map it, then the guys at Emerald map it like it is stolen!!!. I have always felt that getting anywhere with the AEM stuff is far harder in the UK than in the US as far less people specialise with AEM here. Fact is I took my car to an "AEM SPECIALIST" and it was doing 4MPG running in!!. I would prefer to use people on here that I know and trust with my car than randoms who think they are specialists.

So my car will be going off to Jimmer to get the head gasket sorted, then John is going to meet him and sort the Emerald system out.

Its less expensive than the AEM system as well so its good value for money in my opinion.

wow this sounds awsome. is the £1000 for the tt engines well? a im doing a few small engine mods and want to get over 400bhp. this could help nicely:)

TT just over.

Ie Over £1000 but less than £1100. Difficilt to be any nore precise.

the AEM is a sound system and does what the emerald does and probably more ..but as you say ..specialists are few and far between .......i have an AEM to fit on mine but am fortunate that it has had a map for a TT with very similar spec to mine allready installed

i will be taking my 300 with AEM to TR racing for full maping and setting up ...hopefully see around the 480 - 500 rwhp mark
