After nearly cooking my engine I now have some questions regarding how the engine actually works.

1) Are the turbos in any way cooled by water? I was v. surprised to read this and wasn't sure if it was fact or fiction..

2) Are the SMICs air-to-air or air-to-water? Assumed they were air-to-air but wasn't sure..

Cheers

Yes turbo's are water cooled and smic are air to air.

Awesome, not only is my engine on the brink of letting go - I've probably damaged the turbos too! It must be Christmas...:crying:

I think that if you had damaged your engine you would know about it by now, change the oil and drive it with a light foot for a few miles, remember these are old cars and should be treated as such unless you have a large wallet.

having never been able to afford a new car, mechanical sympathy has been a must for most of my driving life. Its different when you have to pay to fix 'em yourself(reminiscing about thraping the mum's car(s) to bits:whistling:)

That said, I bought it to drive it. Me and my mate have always said, its better to expose a problem than drive around it. But I think you're right - if there was an issue, it would be apparent by now. It's just not my kinda luck to get away with something like that.

Would rather spend money improving the car than fixing it though, so point taken..

the tubs will be fine unless you were really thrashing it. the oil does a good job of cooling and many older turbos were not water cooled. the water cooling is only really needed for sustained high speed runs

some z's on here have had there water feeds removed by some garages. but its not recommended from what i have read.

mate change the oil every 3000 miles and make sure the coolant is serviced. I had no trouble at all with mine. Going to do another oil service this weekend, i keep the engine oil gold.

No, didn't thrash it - as I was aware something was amiss. Did get it very hot though, but turbo's weren't blowing too much so hopefully they were still within a comfortable operating temp...
