Side lights work, full beams work, dipped headlights do not. Bugger!

changed fuses, bulbs are clearly not blown - my boyfriend has looked at the wiring and has found some electricians tape on some wires relating to the lights, so suspect some sort of botched repair by previous owner.

Can I just check, when you depress the brake pedal, is it normal for a red light on the dash saying "lights" to come on? Or is this part of the above issue possibly?

Hoping someone at the meet up on Sunday will have a bit more knowledge of a Z than us will be able to point us in the right direction. In the meantime, no night time driving for me!!

The 'lights' warning is telling you that you've got a tail/brakelight out.

Regards your headlights, do you have access to a multimeter? You need to check if there's power there and if not, where it terminates.

As a quick fix/bodge, you could take a feed off your sidelights just to get you out after dark for the time being until you fix it proper. Don't think it'd pass an mot like that though.

You may have a faulty relay, can't quite remember how they are all wired up now though ...

Thats weird because the rear and brake lights are all working. Will investigate this tomorrow and at the weekend - def don't want to bodge anything - have no need to be out after dark this week til Sat and have access to another car if needs be thankfully

Cheers

Cheers for the link mate

Check the fuses in the drivers footwell , iirc if 3rd fuse on the top row blows it does that to your lights . HTH

I gonna sound silly here but i had this happen to me once, long ago, and it was the indicator / hi low beam stalk, waggled it a few times and the lights cme back on, then i left it alone and its been ok since......... i'll go back to my planet now.....

Check the large relay in the fuse/relay box passenger side front of engine for the front lights.

Have you got any form of aftermarket rear lights on the car? if so that can be the cause of the light on the dash coming on when you brake, not unusal.

I had been playing with the indicator stalk - the lights had been fine before then - haven't had any luck waggling them back to life so far tho!

Checked all the fuses in the car now - will replace all the bulbs in the car asap, but they all look fine and its weird that they were working and now they aren't - and the lights are all standard equipment as far as I can tell, hoping any other owners at this Sunday's meet up might be able to advise tho!

You have never actually said whether or not there is power at your multi plug, presuming there is not then.

Also, a bulb looking fine is not good enough, you need to light them up on a bench or direct from the battery.

Do the simple things and it will be just that most probably.

I'll bring a multi meter with me on Sunday if that helps ?

Cheers Tony - and I will bring some bulbs lol

Hard to get hold of I've heard tho....

There is power there, got 1 to work briefly yesterday - really strange. Feel sure its because I was messing on with the indictor stalk/full beams stalk when they just stopped working....

Have you had the light pod off and then the multi plugs off and then back in again, this simple action could reveal something loose, give the wires a good wiggle!!

As in one of the posts check down by the driver footwell again, theres a 10 or 12 amp fuse in there which has gone on me 3 times, thats the exact thing. when you put the lights on full beam comes on and cannot be cancelled, but dipped doesnt work, sidelights do.

This is EXACTLY the problem - can you recall which fuse? Boyfriend has changed a couple - man, its frustrating! Will have another go tomorrow as I'm on half day

Not fuses, the large relays in the large relay box in the engine bay, passenger side.

Look in the boot area for a cut wire then cos if the lights are stock and no bulbs are blown, you must have a cut wire there which lighting up the dash light.

K, push the seat back get down by the accelerator pedal, take off the plastic fuse cover. there's a fuse puller in there- its top row about 3rd or 4th along, a red fuse (10 or 12v). Shine a bright light you'll see the break.

Yup, found a cut wire - so that explains the red "lights" thing lighting up every time I brake. That doesn't explain the headlights not working tho - replacing all the fuses now, see if that works but it looks rather like the wires in the whole sodding car have been cut/crimped and generaly botched. Grrr!

Cheers for replying

Just gonna remove the pod now, see if we can see anything

main is a h1 bulb and dipped is H3c for j spec (from memory)

should be lots of threads on that one though, got a set of the h3c on ebay dirt cheap and there not bad to be fair, hid is the way to go for the Z though!
