When I was costing up the parts to fix mine they stopped counting past 1500. There are so many discontinued parts and you have to btw other things to make it work. Its cheaper just to buy a new box or take a risk and try and get a good secondhand one.

£1500:shock:Flippin eck Gaz did not expect that reply:shock:

What parts are actually worn on yours then. I'll rephrase, what gears feel worn, or syncros feel tired?

It's not always a necessity to replace all components.

3rd and 4th in low speed sound awful, cannot hear engine note over it!

You have checked the gear shifter gaitor? I know they tend to make 2nd and 4th audible, but might just want to check that anyway.

3rd and 4th are on the same shaft iirc. So you might just need to get bearings. It's the 5th gear syncros and bearings that cost the money.

Jimmer might be able to put in some new bearings on the shaft for you...might be worth giving him a call. If it's just those bits, then it won't be too pricey.

Thanks Si for info, i have all the machinery to remove/refit bearings so need just the bitz.

5th Seems ok its just the horrendous noise in 3/4 at low speed.

When you say check gaitor.....do you mean to see if its fitted correctly to enable noise reduction coming into cab?

Give bristol transmissions a call

I did mate.......................TWICE they were going to get back to me!

Yup. They sometimes become seperated from each other or from the locating bead around the top of the tx tunnel. Check both and also see if either have split.

Thought so mate yep had a look around when i replaced leather all seems tickty boo!

Did you pull the rubber tags from the bottom half through the holes of the top half? Is the base of the lower rubber deffo secured (not just to look at) to the lip on the tx tunnel?

So many parts have been discontinued that the new replacement parts require other new parts and this goes on and on. I was looking at fixing my old box( sheared 6 teeth off of a syncro) the list of parts was horrendous. I bought a secondhand box in the end. I do have my old one which im keeping for any parts I may need in the future.

Mate,

I can get the gearbox reconditioned and guaranteed no quibbles to have no problems for two years (or 24k miles) or your money back. It cost a grand, let me know if your interested.

Brand new 99spec Box (with several improvements) is about £1200

Is that from Nissan Maindealer?

sorry no, thats from the U.S...and would be plus shipping. But having just checked with current exhange rates its more like £1500 :(

Cost of part from US + Cost of shipping + VAT + Duty would probably be the same or more expensive than simply buying from a main dealer....or MJP.

It is a tough call...... I have a noisy gearbox (manual), and seen many on e-bay, but, can you trust a second hand box from e-bay!? MJP quoted me (this was a fairly loose price, dependant on findings) at £800-£1000.

I think i would only buy a second box from a known/trusted seller. Until that time comes, i will just turn my stereo up a little louder, lol.

The engine and box will be coming out end of year, so will wait until then and strip it down and see extant whats worn.

I can then price up the bits If i can source the required parts and at a reasonable cost will go ahead and rebuild it.

If thats to expensive or not an option [due to lack of new parts] i at least got 4/5 months to source a good second hand one!

Is this car costing you more than you thought lol!!!!

Didnt you fit a new clutch. might be somthing to do with that if the noise wasnt there before you did it??

Defo gearbox Dave, clutch ok apart from a judder which we feel is down to an o/heated fly wheel. I have purchases a repair kit for that so that niggle should be sorted.

Stu has done loads to this car and the only bit i dont think he has done is the box, so i guess the power this thing has it was only a matter of time that the box would need attention! but yes car is costing me more than i would have liked but i am, fussy and cannot live with small things that need attention that others would feel is acceptable lol
