Some people may not understand this unless you are a dog person but I don't care.

12 years ago I rescued Cassie a lab cross dog from a guy who used to beat her, she was scared of men when I 1st had her. She became a very loving well behaved companion and has been through alot with me, good times and bad, my illness and divorce, my son being born and me getting remarried. One of the reasons we moved to the country 3 months ago was so our 3 dogs could have a better life. They are all part of the family and sleep in our bedroom and sometimes jump up on the bed to. Last night she was fine, played with the hose pipe as usual, came round the bedside to say goodnight. I got up this morning and had a shower, our 2 year lab was on the bed playing with her at 7.30, I was 1/2 dressed as I said hello to her. She turned and walked past our bed and just collapsed, groaned a little. I laid with her as my wife frantically phoned the vets to see who was open. I lifted her on to our bed, she tried getting up twice and even wagged her tail. Then she laid down and her pupils dilated, I knew then she wasn't going to make it, after 5 minutes of laboured breathing about 8am she passed away, my old friend.

Today has been a bit of a blur, the two others are just wandering around lost as Cassie was the top dog. I picked a nice spot in the garden for her and had to dig a rather large hole as she was a big old girl. I carried her downstairs to the garden and sat with her in the sun for a while until we buried her with a toy and her walking harness. I will miss her....

I get a text this afternoon from my boss saying sorry about the dog but I should of made an effort to come in this afternoon as we are short staffed and he wants me to see him in the morning, angry is an understatement

But this post is to my friend Cassie

rip cassie, i would not even think of work if anything happened to riddick

my mother has just put her dog down, it was a mongrel and was 17 years old, her throat had started to collapse and she wasnt very active, the vet told her it was for the best, still brings a tear to ya eye though

I'm truly sorry to hear that mate - I've always had dogs in the family since the day I was born and can't imagine life without them - sadly this means I've also had to bury them when their time has come. All I can say is your boss is clearly not a dog owner and doesn't realise that whether it's an animal or not, losing a part of your family is NOT something you just get over in a few hours.

Hi Anthony,

I'm not a dog person; although I do appreciate just how much a beloved pet can become part of the family. And how a pet's demise can have such a detrimental effect on everyone in the family.

I'm sorry for your loss mate; and I hope your meeting with the boss isn't too heavy.

Hopefully he'll understand. As an employer myself I have been in similar situations to your boss; so all I can offer is the following advice:

Bosses don't always see the whole picture until they come face to face in a frank discussion with their staff. Show how upset you are without getting angry; and offer to take the day as holiday (or even unpaid leave - although you are always entitled to utilize your holiday allowance). Appologize for leaving the company short staffed etc etc.

Then, as I have done in the past, he should appreciate your feelings and excercise whatever discrection is necessary. I doubt he'll get mad at you - my guess is that he was just annoyed at the time; through a lack of understanding the depth of your feelings, for what he thought was "just a dog." Let's not forget he chose to inform you by text rather than a (more personal) phone call - I would always phone.....

I hope everything works out for you in the end mate - good luck and best wishes,

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I'm really sorry to hear that mate, such a sad story :( RIP Cassie.

Don't forget to add a picture to the thread in memory :)

Sorry to hear about your loss fella, I lost my springer spaniel george in february after 13 yrs and it was like loosing a brother so i know how you feel.

Just remember the good times fella !!!

R.I.P. Cassie. Never had a dog myself, but if your boss has half a brain and half a heart i think when you explain he might understand. Sorry for your loss.

Very sorry to hear. A dog is far more than just a pet, they really are part of the family; something many who dont have dogs do not understand.

Be consoled that she went in a peacefull and realativly quick manner with you at her side.

R.I.P Cassie.

sorry to hear this fella rip cassie, lost my loyal border collie about 4 months ago he was a rescue and 16yrs old, he just got up one day walked across front room as though he was drunk then just collapsed his back legs failed and he had to be put to sleep, i've got another rescue dog now as the house never felt the same they do leave a big space when they go

Nearly had me in tears just reading your post mate, tell your Boss to stick it and take as much time as you need.

Really sorry to hear mate. I know how you feel, you've lost the most loyal friend you could ever ask for but the way you have to look at it is what a lovely life she had. It's all we can do as loving owners is to treasure them cos their lives are so short in comparisson.

I feel ya matey, I lost my brother and best friend late last year, Foster, the most intelligent, loving and human dog I've ever known, 9 years old, I rescued him too as a tiny pup from a bunch of scrots beating him with sticks. Little did I know he would turn out to be a 9 stone grissley bear! But as gentle and affectionate as could be. Your pics brought a good few tears matey, remember the quality times, it's a sad but true fact, dogs just don't live long enough... RIP Cassie....

sad news mate they're part of the family & breaks your heart when they pass away.. im gutted for u.. as already said ..all we can do is to remember we gave them a happy loving life while they were here. RIP Cassie .

Really sad,,,lost my cat of 19 years 2 years ago,,,i was in bits,,,,still miss her :-(

Sad news bud a dog is just like a member of the family and your best friend. We have just got back from holidays and lifted our dog from the kennals she was all over me and the kids, she is quite old and starting to slow up a little and she will be sadly missed if any thing happened to her. R.I.P. Cassie

Rip cassie, god i nearly had a heart attack when my rotwieller pup gashed her leg in the garden today! A would hate to see what a would be like when she passes away! I was busy doing a headgasket on my passat and just left everything out in the street to run her to the vets, i own her and her brother, they were tied to one of those hooks you screw in the ground so they could play in the garden while i worked, they knocked the neighbors bin over play fighting and they both tried to run off in the same direction, they're only 5 and a half months old but shes 3.5 stone and her brother is almost 5.5stone so the metal spring let go and caught her leg leaving a two inch gash
