HI All,

Ok, here's the problem.

I had my front bumper, door, rear quarter panel and boot all resprayed a few month ago. Now when i took it to the bodyshop for an estimate they said that even though they would paint them all in the same way the front nose would never be a perfect match because it is plastic.

Now sure enough, they painted all the parts needed and the bumper did look a different shade.

I've used the same bodyshop for 12 years now and they've always been spot on with everything.

Is there any reason this would happen? also, i'm looking to get my front and rear bumpers both painted again in the near future and wondered if there is any way to prevent this mis match of colour.

Cheers

Peter

I can,t see why it would be different bud , the only difference is in the bumper paint they should of added a plasticiser to make it flexible but that shouldn,t change the colour of it :confused:

I know. you'd think wouldn't you.

They did warn me before if was painted though and they know what they're talking about. but i don't understand why it happens.

The only way this happens is if they one painted the panle ie the bumper of the car or masked it up seperatly or painted at any given different time.it is possible also that it will be more notice in base and clear and not a solid two pack coulour.is your car metalic silver?

My car is pearl white, it does have a metallic tinge to it.

was your bumper painted at a different time to the rest.my guss is yes and once corrys finised ill tell you why.

i'm a painter to trade, and i believe this to be very possible, more so on heavy metallic colours such as silvers/greys that contain alot of metalflake, apparently it's to do with how the metal flake lies on plastics compared to how it lies on a metal panel, it's possible that it can look ever so slightly a different shade, even if it is painted at the same time as everything else

it has always been a problem with plastic parts i used to work in a body shop 20yrs ago and the problem with metallic paint was there then we did get plastic bumpers to match body but cant for the life of me remember how

the missus had a megane with plastc wings and they looked different colour from day one went back to showroom and they had bout twenty of the cowing things all with different shaded wings weird shit eh

Ford had a similar problem with the Electric Orange paint on the RS focus. In some lights the plastic parts that were painted were a different shade(minor)

I believe the problem is just with some pearl finishes.

Its as Black Zed says. It can be one of the biggest problems when refininshing a car. The Spray leaving the gun will generate a different electrical charge to that of the car. This small amount of electrical/static difference is enough to attract the particles in the paint and cause them to react in a certain way when coming in contact with different materials. Although the car would already be primed, it will not totally insulate the car. Whereas plastics/fibreglass are totally non-conductive.

Had exactly this issue on my silver 996 when someone smashed into the back.

Its as already said the paint goes differently onto plastic parts

If you look really closely you can see it on brand new cars.It is normally very slight most people would not notice but from now on everyone who has read this thread will

try not to look too hard and all will be o.k.:tongue_smilie:

Speak to Funky si. He has pearl paint and has had it touched up.

No I haven't.

was it painted with cellulose or like mine did you have to go down the water based route.

my painter told me that the whole trade now has to use water based due to the whole in the sky . looks good but not as good as cellulose . apparently all new cars now are painted with water based paint.

and no mines not magnolia before anyone asks!

Supras are the same from stock.

The rear bumpers are well off. white ones are like a greyish white and the red are a much deeper shade.

you can also get a much nicer finish on a solid plastic than most other things. you can also see on wide arch cars the differance between the grp and the finish on the metal

wish id decided to go for solid black now instead of a slight metallic. at least with a black the mettallic is not so obvious

hi plastics always show a diff shade, some colours worse than others but to be honest any pearl cant be matched un less the same person does it the exact same amount is put on even in the exact same way some-times you can blend the colour but never edge to edge, plus the more pearl the more it changes and angles play a major part as one way it looks o.k and from another it can be way off
