Looking into buying a 300zx with cats removed, decat pipes instead. Have heard this will reduce turbo life. Car has around 60,000 miles, am I stupid to look at a car of this mileage with decat as the turbos (£1000+ to replace) could well be on there way home.

Dont ever buy a 300zx and think you'll never have to spend money on it. It is true that the cats can hide failing turbo seals, but if its decatted and not smoking there isnt really any reason why it being decatted shold make it fail any earlier.

Quite often when people decat and they get smoke is because the cats were hiding the smoke/leaking oil seals.

You missed out with ZX-eyes car, few as good as that come up often. What budget do you have in mind?

Don't want to spend more than 6K, but want to get the best sorted example I can that is unlikely to need major repair in the near future. Also I need to be confident I can sell the car in maybe a years time and get 80% of the money back. I'm looking a meht's car, lovely interior but the custom paint maybe a bit too much (I'm 40). Or alternatively there is a nice one on pistonheads, £2,500 but it's an auto (I'm guessing £1500 to convert to manual, so £4000). What do you reckon to Meht's motor or the pistonheads one?

Hmm 500bhp?! I would be wary about the claims of power unless they can show the modifcations to allow it to produce so much! Having said that it coudl be a genuine car with a silly owner. Around 1500 to convert, but you might well get some good money back for a working autobox (my first one had a rebuilt one in it when i converted it so i got £300 or so back for the box which helped towards the conversions costs)

Yeah that one is a minter :cool3:

I know! Really quite tempted and im not even looking! LOL

sorry I do apologise I thought that was a manual.

Mehts is a gorgeous car, I didnt know it was forsale actually! What is that up for?

£5,500, my only worry is the custom paint which may be a bit in your face for an elderly guy like myself. I mean the great appeal of a 300zx over Supras and Skylines etc is that it actually looks good and is even a bit understated, classy even.

Custom paint job looks grey to me or am I missing somewhere. Its hardly a Yellow to bright green flick! Surely if your buying this as a midlife crisis car then you want to be noticed??! LOL

It's not that removing the cats (or fitting a less restrictive exhaust) will specifically reduce turbo life. It more like shows a problem

that was present, but previously less visible - ie that the turbo seals are on their way out!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I may be selling mine at some point soon, it's just had the front bumper sprayed to match and is awaiting a set of coilovers. I'm surprised they are confidently fetching so much?!

500bhp on an autobox, yeah right!!!!!! good luck

mine may well be going up for sale soon, 12months MOT and 6months tax, just going to sort out a few interior niggles (Rear leather peeled off and 1 targa leather peeled off as well) then i think it will be up for grabs soon!

Twin Turbo Manual! Will be updating the My Rides section as car loooks s**t in most of those pics :)

So keep a look out

Yeah it's kinda like the standard gun metal colour but with a bit more blue and some kinda paint flecks in it. It's the flecks that worry me, I don't want anything too dramatic.

sorry mate

as I said zx-eyes car is now nicely tucked up in my garage but even that car needs a full respray and some interior mods to be a minter but the rest of the car is very well sorted thanks to Isaac.Keep looking they are out there but you may have to make the odd compromise to get somewhere near what you want but always start with a true genuine solid car

good luck with your quest and take your time !
