Hi Bud, I`ve just done mine, Its quite simple, but you need a specialist tool, Firstly remove the leads from the battery! that stops the bag blowing if anything short circuits, there are 2 small plastic covers either side of the steering wheel, remove them with a screwdriver, under those covers there are 2 torx screws, iirc they are about 8mm but i will check for you, remove the 2 screws, this then releases the airbag unit and it simply pulls out from the steering wheel! unclip all the wires and block connectors, then you need to undo the nut that holds the steering wheel in place, about 30mm but i will check again for you, the steering wheel should then pull off, I`ve probably missed something but its quite easy with the right tools

Random but, is it possible to fit and have the function of the airbag from the series 2 into the series 1? or is there a shed load of wiring and sensors involved which makes it silly?.. just curious if anyone knows.. cheers

What an informative post by Dazvert. And Easy to follow pics.

This needs to go in the FAQ section with all the "Car Mad " crap removed.

Perhaps a mod can have a look???

An old thread I know, but safety first.

The '96 FSM covers the Airbag system and safety precautions when handling the airbag assembly - in particular

not storing and handling the airbag in the "face down" position. In the event of accidental deployment it would turn

the steering wheel into a projectile, sending it up towards the person handling it.

Additionally, the two pins in the airbag connector can be shorted together to remove the chance of an electrical (static)

discharge setting off the airbag.

. I should store it how? I have the bag on my piano face down now! The steering wheel is seperated from it..
