Since I've had the car it's vibrated noticeably on the motorway. Nothing to do with the road surface.

 

I've just had my wheels balanced at a place that came recommended to me and I have to say, meticulous isn't the word. What a place, and what a nice bunch of guys!! Thy even gave the suspension and brakes a bit of a health check while they were at it and it was dirt cheap too.

 

They even do 4 way alignment if anyone's interested in the Bristol area. (Turns out my car has HICAS. Didn't know that!! DOH!)

 

Anyway, to my point. The vibration, while much better, is still there.

 

Any of you guys got any thoughts on what else it might be? I was thinking prop' bearing but I dunno tbh.

check your track rod ends mate, if the wheel wobbles slightly when off the ground that will cause the prob your describing, I had it on mine between 60/70mph turns out my pass track rod end was on its way out.

what speed does it start to become noticable, and is it more so under braking?

If you get vibration through the front it could be the following :

 

Steering rack bushes

tension rod bushes

Upper link bushes

Buckled wheels

Wheel out of balance

 

If it's vibration through the rear

 

Prop shaft bearing

Gearbox mount

Wheel out of balanced

Buckled wheel.

Worn Hicas arms (inners and/or outer links)

If you get vibration through the front it could be the following :

 

Steering rack bushes

tension rod bushes

Upper link bushes

Buckled wheels

Wheel out of balance

 

If it's vibration through the rear

 

Prop shaft bearing

Gearbox mount

Wheel out of balanced

Ouch, that's quite a list!!

 

However, while he was going over it he did point out that there was a noticeable amount of play in the rear off side inner track rod end.

 

I'm quite sure the wheels aren't buckled although one is missin a spigot ring, but the guy did his best to line it up and gave it a spin to check it so I'm quite happy they're running true.

 

I'm off up to Tamworth next Friday, I'll get Jeff to have a shufty.

Shows up about 65 - 75 and comes and goes a bit if that makes sense. It doesn't get worse with braking so I'm fairly sure it's not the front end. TBH, it does feel like it's coming from the centre of the car which is why I was thinking about the prop bearing, (I had a Senator and that exhibited similar symptoms and that's what it was.)

Also steering rack bushes. these are the most looked over.

Could very well be that, i thought this was evident at lower speeds also though say 45/55

It's a place near the Oldbury Power Station called 'Miles Tyres'.

 

They really instilled a lot of confidence in me.

 

The car was in there about an hour, they were very particular with the wheels, because my problem was vibration they had a look round and identified play in one of the rear track rods and found one of the brake pad retaining pins to be loose so they fixed that too. (fixed with nothing more than an 'R' clip but I was very glad he noticed it!)

 

The guy was taking notes as he went round the car as a check list and ticked everything off when it was attended to and cross checked with his colleague.

 

Just really really enthusiastic and professional.

They specialise in tyres and exhausts, but I'd be inclined to approach them for other work too if it came to it, particularly if I'm going to have to have a HICAS rod replaced.

I would get a new spigot ring sorted for the wheel with one missing. This could well be the problem. It would be very hard to mount the wheel spot on with out one and any slight variance will behave like an out of balance wheel giving vibration at speed.

ETA:- Scratch that, I found some. I just need to measure the hub on my wheel now.

The hub on the Nissan is 66.1 so you just need to measure the wheel. Take one of your other wheels off and look at the spigot ring adaptor. Generally in small writing the inner diameter and outer diameter is printed.

For example my spigot adaptors are 66.1 to 73.1mm

Yeah, been down the same road myself once or twice. (The second time the wheels were so buckled I scrapped them! Shame, they were nice too. I'd even had them refurbished 'cos I thought that meant unbuckling them. :-/ )
