I was on the net today as usual, i had this forum open in one window and robos zed site open in another window, then all of a sudden, i had a swirling mouse pointer as if something was happening or opening, then everything froze.

Everytime i try to start the laptop, it goes on this bloody loop of trying to repair then cant. Ive tried to open in safe mode and it reverts back to trying to repair.

Anyone had a similar problem? ive tried searching sites on the subject, but they keep mentioning the Vista CD, but mine didnt come with it, it was already installed.

Im having to use my old laptop to type this, but its so slooooowwwww.

Cheers

Hi mate, it looks as though it will boot then leaves me 2 options. Repair computer, which goes through something then comes up with a window saying it cant do it. Or start windows normally and it reverts back to the first option. I have tried to start in safe mode, no go. I tried every option for restart after pressing F8 and still the same. I got fed up hours ago lol.

There seems to be some sort of registry fix that ive downloaded onto this laptop, but how would i get it to load in my vista one?

Cheers

Graham and thanks for the offer

Hi mate, didnt get one with the laptop. If i download this, does it need to be recorded onto a blank dvd or a media disc?

Cheers

Sorry to hear the issues graham, cant help much as used vista for a week and ripped it off!!

you not thought of going back to xp or up to w7?

Is W7 a completely seperate operating system or can vista be updated/graded to it?

only advice i can give is as above dump vista go windows 7 i've got 5 pcs/laptops now all on win 7 (thanks technet) and no issues on any and 3 of them are used for karaoke/disco work and none of these have crashed since last october win 7 all the way

you should be able to just upgrade from vista 32 bit to win 07 32 bit

if not you will have to do a fresh install is your vista 32bit graham?

Good question, the product key etc is on the bottom of the laptop but most of the top writing has worn, so cant tell, till the system is fixed.

fair point lol should of thought i'd hazard a guess it will be 32bit and there should be an upgrade option, if so, if not it will need to be formatted etc, is it loosing files your more concerned about mate?

Ive got a stand alone hard drive i back everything up with, but i havent done it for a few weeks, so would only lose a few pics etc, mostly engine rebuild stuff that i can download again. im using my old laptop at the minute which is on XP but its old and slow, well slower than my Toshiba one with vista..

if you install windows 7 without formatting it moves all your current files into a folder on the hard drive call windows.old (i think) all your documents etc will be stored in there

Graham a Toshiba laptop with Vista normally has a recovery partition on the hard drive. When you turn it on (before the windows loading screen) is there an option to press F12 or something? You should be able to get into the recovery console from there and do a fresh install of Vista from the recovery partition. (This does not delete files in My documents etc)

Not thought of putting XP back on the newer laptop? i swear by xp-sp3 its a custom pack though with all the cool vista elements but none of the rest :)

Win 7 is superb though :)

Sorry for the late reply, have been working. Anyhow burn it to a DVD disc mate, and when it says press any key to boot from CD/DVD press a key.

You can upgrade to windows 7 from Vista. Just put the windows 7 Boot CD in and it will say do you want to upgrade or do a clean install.

Thanks for the info, but couldnt get it to do anything. I pressed F12 to see what can be done, F8, F2 infact every F'ing button

Ive taken it to a local guy who has seen this many times, so hopefully he can get it going again, then i will upgrade to win 7.

I knew vista was crap, but i dont need it to do much, i dont play games on it just browse the net or download the odd pic i need for the engine rebuild, i dont even download much music and if i do, i zip it over to my portable hard drive as and when.

Cheers

Graham
