What's the law on exhaust noise levels?......

...I had a couple of cops give me some grief over the loudness of my exhausts, this evening.

I have an NA with large bore s/steel catless pipes, and this cop car pulled up outside my house as I was parking, and said they had been following me across Town, by the sound of my exhausts!....they said I was a bit old for such a car...And that I should consider selling it..What a cheek!

I was wondering if they can nick you for being too loud.

They can probably do you under the construction and use regs, especially if the exhaust doesn't have an appropriate British Standards (BS) stamp. Theoretically, any exhaust fitted to a vehicle should conform to the original parameters of when the car was sold (in this country).

If the car was imported with an exhaust that is illegal for this country then I would have thought that the import approval/conversion process (SVA in some cases) should have taken care of it - but I'm sure that it's the current owner who'll get clobbered.

I say - report them to their seniors for the way they spoke to you - that'll keep 'em busy for a month or two and they'll stop hastling you!!!

I saw a program about a guy who built an AC cobra kit car. When he got his car checked over by BSA they said the limit was 110db his was 109.

Cheekey bastards...is all I've got to say on the subject.

What may I ask, were they driving at the time? A bloody Focus or something equally as arse?

Nothing better to do than follow you accross town listening out of their window to the sound of you lovely exhaust?

Shouldn't they be out catching real criminals who are probably burgling some poor OAP, kicking the shit of her for 20 squid or something!!!

A bit OLD for that car? That would have done it for me, how old were they? Most forces seem to have resorted to recruiting abortion leftovers recently, I saw a couple of female coppers in Tesco last month that I thought weren't even old enough to get away with buying ten JPS from a dodgey newsagent!

I say they should be out nicking car jackers etc.

Useless f&*kers!

My thoughts entirely!

If it wasn't for the fact that I'm in court on friday, for speeding at 112mph on the M40, I would have given them some verbal!I thought I'd better tread carefully though, as they were obviously trying to wind me up.

The car they were driving was an unmarked silver Honda Accord Type R, the same model that stopped me coming off the motorway a few weeks ago....harrasment or what?!

JEZ

Jez,

Are you pulling me tadger or what??? I'd of reported them for harrassment, bastards!

Did you get a good brief for court? Or are you going to Quincey QC yourself?

Tim

;-)

Hi,

I'm not bothering with a brief, as they wanted £250 just to turn up!

I will take my chances, as I can just about survive without my car, if I get banned...which I'm sure to do!

A ban is preferable to a heavy fine at the moment...My employer is understanding, and has offered me lifts to work if necessary.

Just hope I don't have to leave the Z parked up for too long!

JEZ

Jez,

Get there early and ask to see the duty solicitor. FREE! You are entitled to this.

I nearly paid a solicitor £700 for the day but it was too much so I went alone and found out you can see someone on the day for nowt.

I was up for a ban and the guy represented me in court and was great. He took down my story and then made up loads of total bullshit on my behalf and I got off with a fine!

You realise if you get a short ban you don't get points on your licence which may help if you are at risk of losing it from totting up points. I am fairly sure that if you are banned for 56 days or more you get a clean licence. You can get off by pleading mitigating circumstances but this can only be done once for similar offences so if you have done it before it is not an option.

A good trick for the future is to "lose" your licence when it's fairly clean. Apply for a new one and then you have two. The new one for collecting points, the old clean one for showing to people!
