Hi everyone, I finally joined the team, Ive had my car nearly two years, collected a load of parts and decided to attack it following all the Z technical and mods on the internet, but in my enthusiasm instead of doing one thing at a time and the testing, I changed the lot, dumped aircon, EGR,cut off pipes fitted blanking plates, plugged manifold, dumped AIV, changed PCV valves and hoses, changed cambelt, and guides, changed water pump, thermostat, lightened bottom crank pulley, big radiator ,electric fan, dumped cruise control, dumped 4 wheel steer, fitted big brakes, one piece alloy propshaft, driftworks camber arms, 2 sets new wheels, one set bought by police, thats another story, stainless decat exhaust system etc etc, anyway what I am coming to is, the car was working fine prior to my advances, oh also fitted new bailey dump valves and a large one piece intercooler, big day 12.30 this morning started car for the first time, fired straight away, idling fine, it just wont rev,I can get it up to about 2000 rpm then it starts to cut out, I have double checked everything and cannot find where its gone wrong, does anybody out there have any idea what I could have done, when I shut the engine off it seems like there is a release of air around the plennum area, but I cannot locate any leak, plus I cannot remember if this is normal. I also removed the carbon cannister.

any advice would be appreciated, even a few drinks if the answer solves the problem, I was supposed to be drivin g this to Italy the second week of July, its not looking too promising at the moment.

thanks,

Ged

Cutting out at 2k revs, think you may have a boost leak somewhere? Was it NEW dump valves or second hand? Could be these.

Welcome to the club.

Welcome to the forum.

Check the maf, if its faulty or loose connection it wont rev above about 2-2.5k revs

Thanks guys, good to hear from you all, smithy if you can give me a call on 497835 maybe you can identify the problem, I have run out of ideas now I have just wired up the electric fan, that all works, can you tell me how I test the MAF, do I just unplug this and see if it makes any difference ? the dump valves are brand new, infact everything is new that I replaced, all the technical bits said that EGR /AIV etc would not affect the ECU no management light is showing on the dash, there is a way of reading light codes on the ECU, am I correct ? While I am on does anyone know the best settings for camber etc, I was supposed to be getting the old girl on a 4 wheel alignment on Monday, dont think its got enough grunt to get out of the garage, lol !!!!

appreciate your help,

Ged

No worries mate, i can pop round for 10 mins tonight around 7pm or tomorow around 11am. Same place?

Will show yer whats what and how to test.

Hi took the ECU out last night, its giving the code for the MAF sensor I tried cleaning with electrical cleaner, fitted a better rubber gasket between the sensor body and air filter manifold, cleaned the wires, I would say this gave a slight improvement, but still not reving above 2k, checked the ECU again still giving MAF fault, will check the wiring today to see if any are broken, if not will have to order a new MAF sensor and then see what happens, does anyone know if there are any upgrades on MAF sensors, or is it just the standard replacement ?.

thanks,

Ged

Standard replacement mate It's easier to remove as a whole with my induction kit already fitted as well.

That should tell you if MAF or wiring.

cheers

Hi all, had a nice guy loan me his MAF sensor, this did not make any difference, after refiitting mine again, no faults showed on the ECU, we found a large air leak on the left hand throttle body, on further investigation the silicone hoses seem to have grown in size, they are not a good fit, I managed to seal this leak, and no its still the same, starts smooth, runs, wont rev, its running rich, all the EGR pipes and electrical solenoid are removed, the main lump is still bolted on the back of the engine, but from the paperwork thats all it is bolted to the engine, unless I am mistaken, I have now started to check the cambelt timing to see that this is correct, I have been told there is an article on this site about cambelt replacement, can anyone direct me to it, I see JEFF Z world says that owning one of these cars should be an adventure, hes not wrong, because if I cant sort it I may be paying for him to come to the IOM with his laptop !!!!!!!!!! thats an adventure.

thanks,

Ged

welcome to the club ged... whats the story with the police then lol ;)

Hi Baz, Richard,

thanks for the welcome. Baz the police thing is a long story, but a motorcyclist fell off in front of me, he obviously thought he was not going fast enough, because this old red car was on his tail, anyway bike and body spread all over the road, I stopped within 6 inches of the bike, guy was spark out called police ambulance, looked after the guy, police decided that I must have had something to do with accident, confiscated my car to take to the test centre, 2 days later got it back with a squashed weel rim, they had put it on a low loader with ratchet straps through the wheels, anyway 7 months later no charges and a new set of wheels and tyres paid for by police, my original wheels were from USA, and they had stopped making them, anyway they have my number now so if I ever get the old girl running again the police will be looking to get their money back ! lol.

shortened the whole story but you get the jist.

cheers,

Ged

haha, damn right they should foot the 'old bill' though!

Hi guys, days later no reply from Jeff, so battled on have been through the lot, finally took off one set of pipes from the single intercooler, no instructions on how this should connect up only a picture from one side, anway started up, and reved like it should, the fumes nearly killed me but sucess, does anyone know how the pipes should be connected up on this single intercooler, its an e bay job listed for 300zx, anyway if not I will try some arrangements to see how it works.

bye for now,

Ged

Hi found pictures on the website, pipes go opposite way around, so im going to try this now, fingers crossed.

till later,

Ged

Aha ! well done that man! sorry no reply by me just had the most manic fortnight of the year and just about shattered every night when we eventually get home.

To be honest when I looked at your e-mail I somehow missed the single intercooler bit?? I was thinking along the lines of cam timing!!

So now we know the issue we need the fix, right the single intercooler is fixed together in a X formation, like this one below?

The pipwork is an odd affair to get right and the way to get it in your head is this, with this system the left hand turbo is now going to boost the right hand side of the engine and the right hand turbo boost the left hand side of the engine, its no matter anyway as the plenum is all linked anyway.

Start by connecting one side and look at the cooler outlet flow as diagonolly, so from bottom left to top right and bottom right to top left.

As I said seems a bit weird in your head but when as you can see with it connected wrongly you the induction air from the turbo`s is opposing each other.

Will look for a pic and post back

Cheers

Hi Jeff,

I understood you were busy, I did actually get on the website and found some pictures and have connected up, my god its fantastic to hear this reving again, it souunds clean and crisp, I have learnt a lot about this car over the last few weeks, I still need you to take a look at the list of parts as it would be nice to have as spares and I want to lift off the plenum and do the mods to that and remove the remains of the EGR. I would like to get hold of a good engine bay wiring harness that I could chop out all the connections that are not needed. Thanks for your reply.

Latest took the car out for a lap of the TT course Tuesday night, lots of traffic car was running really well, had a run with a modified focus st, he had an on board camera, this at one stage showed flames out of my exhausts !, does anyone know what the best pressures are for 18 inch wheels 225/40 front, and 265 /35 rear, also with adjustable rear camber arms does anyone know which is the best setting.

thanks,

Ged
