I just had an HID kit fitted by Zedworld yesterday, and i noticed this evening that only one side is working...

When i remove and replace the wires in the connection points on the one not working, it comes on for a brief second then off again.

Same with when i switch the lights off and on, it comes on for a brief instant and then goes out again.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Yeah, i bought these from ebay, and Jeff fitted them for me, they were working yesterday when i was there, but haven't had to use them till tonight.

When i switch on and off the dodgy one comes on then off again.

Annoying really.

the ballast unit might be faulty and may not igniting the Bulb properly. What is the colour of the bulb when it lights up? cool blue/ice white or a pinkish colour?

Check the ground, to stop them going off with the high beam, it has to be a good grounding point, depending on where it has been done, i would look at that first

mines looks orangeyish dont know bout pab though

your bulb is on its way out. they always turn a dim pinkish/orange colour when the bulb is about to expire soon

and @ pablito

if you can. get a voltage meter to see how much current is running tru to the ballast. The HIDs are not usually wired to a seperate ground as most kits (all the ones iv ever seen) derive their power from the dipped beam connecting with 2 flat prongs. Put your old bulb back in and see if its dim. If it lights up fine then its almost defo a faulty ballast unit which is likely not sustaining the current to ignite the gas in the bulb

The feed to the ballast comes from the original bulb feed, so as said there isnt a seperate ground for the feed. If you want to stop the hid's going off when you flash your main beam, then you need to take a ground from the bulb feed, after the ballast

thats what i ment. I thought you was talking about a separate earth feed which i thought would be odd

Well, funnily enough as i reversed out of the driveway this morning, i saw, what i assume is a volt meter lying on my back seats..... Jeff or Jamie must have left it there... bit of a result really considering your advice. :thumbup1:

What sort of current should be running through the ballast? I'll give it a go tomorrow. If the ballast is buggered can it be replaced with any? or am i going to have to deal with customer services in Hong Kong? :gun_bandana:...

Hi Paul, try swapping the ballasts over to check if it does the same thing, the voltage:

High voltage converter and ignitor

Operational input voltage 8-16 V

Maximum input current 8 A

Minimum voltage loaded (lamp on) 60 V

Maximum voltage loaded (lamp on) 120 V

Output voltage from ignitor

Nominal voltage 23000 V

Minimum voltage 18000 V

Lifetime >3000hours

Unless you have a megameter i wouldnt test the output voltage of a ballast, you may end up blowing the meter.

Graham

@ pablito you will need to place the voltmeter on the input feed of the ballast and not the output as when they start they discharge something like 23k volts

the meter should read around 10-14.8v (with the alternator running). or better yet use the voltmeter on the input of the working ballast and use that as comparison

Still up Graham... your as bad as me mate... bloody insomniacs eh.

i think i will give all the prongs/wires a bit of a pinch first, then a bit of a wiggle. If i have no joy i'll swap the ballasts over and see if that does the job.

I'll have a bit of a prod with the volt meter, then probably end up taking it to see someone. :blushing:

Cheers isyss, i will have a go tomorrow and keep you posted. how come your up so late anyway?

i was gonna ask you both the same. im still doing some data backups which is taking ages so that my excuse

i did think why im i still up 3am talking about HIDs

Issys, I just checked out your ride.... Sweeet bumper mate, not seen anything like it.

Yeah, no excuse here really, just don't sleep a lot really, and i don't start till lunchtime so my internal clock is always about 6 hrs out of sync.

Cheers for the advice guys, gives me some hope to take to bed, at least i now have a few things to try tomorrow.

candles would be better than what comes as standard, i dunno about more powerful bulbs, i bought some for my scirocco but couldn't notice the difference really

Being a muso, my time clock is at the opposite end to most people lol.

I bought some 55w HID off ebay for about £30 odd and have had no problems at all with mine. Hope its a quick and easy fix for you, theres not a lot of parts to go wrong tbh, if in doubt go back to normal bulb and start again lol

You can get Ballasts off ebay for around £12. i had to get one for the supra.

Another test is to swap the ballasts over. If it is the ballast then it will flash on the other light

As above really. Swap the ballasts over and see what happens:

Problem swaps to other light = ballast problem

Problem remains on same side = bulb problem

If you need a more reliable ballast or bulbs then let me know as I usually keep these in stock.

Good luck.

Woo hoo, swapped the ballasts round and now they both work fine.

Thanks for all the halp chaps.

Shame that when i was messing around with it outside, showing a mate my new bits, that i noticed some white smoke coming from my left exhaust.

Turbo seals???

Arghhhhh looked for that meter for ages today!! glad the HID issue solved, have pmed you about the meter.

Cheers

Jeff
