Haven't had the Zed long and want to get an oil change done. As a new Z owner i've used the search tool and as expected i've loads of different makes of oils to use which is great.

The problem I do have, is that I always order from Opie oils and when I've done the search on their site for the oil/oil filter service packs https://www.opieoils.co.uk/product-finder/car/oil-filter-service-packs/nissan/1992/300/PETROL/300/21298/product-finder-2.aspx he recommends 5w-30 but on a recent post by the oil man (opie oils) on a thread that yewcheck started 'Best oil to use' he says we should be using and I quote 'Best oil to use would be a synthetic, we recommend either 5w-40 or 10w-50 depending on state of tune and use'.

Now i'm confused

Suppose it's a phone call then! I've got no doubts about opie oils as I used them for every oil change I did over the 4 yrs I had the DC2, I just want to be sure that's all

Cheers Guys

What i found/find confusing is...the cars were never designed to run on "fully synthetic" oil so why does every body go mad over it:confused1:

I found it a complete minefield and stuck to what i always used, and recommended by the previous owner, every body has an opinion on this and to be fair imho seek out the questions direct from manufactures sites, i did and strangely enough i am running the car on oil that is recommended by that company.

I think putting oil which is £80 a gal sounds good when you are in the pub bragging what you have but can get the right oil for a lot less thats my opinion anyhows.

Of course if i am posting on here in the not to distant future about engine rebuilds i was wrong:oops:

Our look up guide just follows the stock recommendation for a stock car, in this case 5w-30. But yes, I do tend to recommend a 5w-40 over it and 10w-50 if heavily modified or used hard/track etc.

Cheers

Its quite simple, the engine is not designed to run on mineral based oil either. Engines to date are not smart enough to know what kind of oil you have put in it. They are designed to run on a visocisty and that ultimately is what the engine is looking for, quality is down to the owner.

Manufacturers also list a minimum spec to be used, the idea of this is so the owner does not use an oil that is so crap it wears the engine out in no time, believe me these oils exist.

As synthetic is better in every way to a mineral based oil it might explain why they are more popular, if you think about it mineral based oils are used for running in a new engine due to their inferior lubrication properties.

Cheers
