Howdi all, sad as it sounds I haven't been able to take the car on the road because it's the end of the month and I've got bugger all to pay for petrol :(

It's gone through another £8 just tuning it so until Tuesday I can't do much more.

Very very frustrating for me especially with the sun being out - I'm itching to drive it now

Okay right, it's Tuesday, i'm back at work and it's pay day! :hyper:

I've spent the past 8 days solidly digging out 50 square meters of garden to build my driveway while i've been off and haven't touched the zed till yesterday.

I'd left it that it was running, fans were calibrated and wired in, tuning was roughly right to get going but needed re-jetting when i could get it up to speed but the bonnet catches weren't fitted.

I accidently bought the wrong aerocatches a while ago and ended up with the flush ones that mount underneath. So decided i'd rather not end up with bolts sticking through the bonnet and try and and find a way to mount them without compromising the paintwork.

The bonnet is a 3 skin affair so drilled the holes interlinking around the template then used a pair of plier bent the bottom 2 skins outward to allow the catch to slide into place.

With a bit of pushing, shoving, banging and hammering i managed to hammer the ally back into place again and trap the catches in place with no flex and they look bob on!

A little paint flaked off from filing so may have to use a little silicon to just cover it up and make it watertight but i'm happy with the first one. The bonnet pin was a pain in the arse to fit but got there in the end!

So what about the rest of the car? Well i did get the timing spot on then ran out of battery and petrol so messed it back up but will top it up with a couple of jerry cans and get it out on the road to see what happens.

A couple of mods i've done over the last build: i've fitted an expansion tank alongside the catch tank under the wing. Ended up teeing off the top heater hose then back down into the suck side of the water pump. Can't vouch if it works yet but we'll soon find out.

Managed to get all the gauge senders working bar the fuel level and fuel pressure gauge. The sender is definitely faulty on the fuel pressure gauge as i swapped it for a boost gauge and got a reading (just the wrong one).

The water sender was the annoying one to find a way to hook it up then had a moment of inspiration - hack off the hose connector on a brass fitment and tap the hole:

I've wired up both fans and mounted them on to the rad this time to make it quicker to get the whole thing out to work on the front of the engine in the future.

I've got 2 weeks to get the car prepped and broken in to race at weald in essex so you'll see a few vids coming up as soon as I get some road time. Just hope the weather holds up!

Haha, it does buddy, it sits perfectly flat. That was just resting without the pin in place on a piece of rubber.

Managed to get out for a first drive last night on the road in it. I did some base calibration and changed a couple of jets to lean it off slightly on the primaries.

Still running about 13:1 on cruise which is still too much but i need to order some smaller jets in to complete the tuning for the road.

It picked up like a scalded cat once i'd adjusted the mixture and dropped it back a bit and hopefully won't be quite so thirsty now.

Handling is still a bit wibbly wobbly but much firmer than before and to be fair the tyres are low, it's still up in the air on the front and the rear suspension is still clunking away so i need to fit some standard rear springs or a spacer to get it to ride without topping out.

What i ideally need is the Miester R/S's I desperately want to get the ride just right.

A bit more work on Friday to swap over the suspension setup over on the front and fit the adjustables on the front and back and we'll see what it's like.

Should hopefully get the revised gearlever back tomorrow so i can work on the agricultural gearshift it has at the moment.

It's quite tappety inside the car so sound insulation needs to be thought about when i get chance, probably more on the bulkhead and around the air vents but i'm not too bothered really.

Temperature is bob on 85 degrees c, oil temp goes up to 100 degrees c and the speedo now works but now need calibrating over a mile.

Fuel gauge still doesn't work so need to rewire the sender and see if i can kick it into life.

Getting there and i'll be off down to North Weald next weekend to get stuck into the zclub drag challenge.

Thanks buddy :D

Okay, a bit more news. I rang a couple of places to try and get some jets to step down the mixture a bit and ended up ringing american auto supplies in minworth and asked if their garage would be able to set the carb and engine up for me.

Dave pointed me in the direction of a place they use with a rolling road in Solihull called Rev It and a guy called Trevor.

Gave them a ring yesterday and had a chat for ten minutes and went through the spec with him, he's got a 383 stroker in his 78 Stingray so wholeheartedly approved of what i'd got in mine :)

Anyway we've arranged a rolling road session next Wednesday morning where they'll do a power run then we'll set up timing, mixture and everything else and tune the primaries and secondaries so it's all up and running ready for next weekend :hyper:

Very excited :hyper: :hyper:

So over the weekend i'll be finishing off everything, getting the suspension set up properly and re engineering the gearlever.

All in all it's all coming along nicely! :D

Haha, cheers Andy, no one is more happy to see the end of this thread than me :)

It'll be a refreshing change to post a new thread entitled - my dyno day out! :sorcerer:

Hopefully see you at North Weald next Sunday?

Interesting question - the answer is absolutely no idea!

BUT i did have a proper talk with Peter Knight at Knight Motorsport Services who's been building them for about 20+ years now and went through the spec with him including cam timing and he was sure it'd make more than 400bhp easily straight off and more than likely 450bhp at his estimate.

He said with the block hugging manifolds i was using i'd only get to that, if i had some long headers made up that'd free up 50bhp and get me to the magic 500bhp mark i wanted from the project so i'll be saving up to have those done later this year.

I'll be happy if we can hit the 420-430bhp mark on Wednesday on a reasonably fresh engine. No idea what that would be at the wheels though.

The torque is unbeliveable, the thing pulls from 1000 RPM upward and cruises quite happily at 1500RPM up hills.

I'm only using the carb's primaries at the moment and there's a block under the accelerator to stop me opening up the secondaries (the carb has smaller primary jets and openings that give a fraction of the power to increase economy when cruising then a mechanical flap opens up past a certain point in the pedal travel and sucks through a much bigger opening)

Haha, cheers Andy, no one is more happy to see the end of this thread than me :)

Well apart from the fact i've now got the second bonnet catch in this is what it's looking like at the moment :)

Off to the rolling road tomorrow so we'll know what it's pushing out all being well and it should all be tuned up for the zed eliminator at Weald on Sunday
