I recently bought my wife an Alfa Romeo 147 that has gas struts to lift and support the bonnet. At the Japfest show I saw numerous examples of vehicles with the same application - although I dont recall ever seeing a 300 with them.

Has anyone ever done this mod ? Any pics ?

Any guesses on the required push pressure that would be required ?

I used an "RS Camloc" adjustable stainless steel gas strut, pt no: RS-339-9038-v/30-186739-34/08. Dont know about sourcing or pricing, got it from my mate as a freebie, maybe google it.

I will post some piccies up tomorrow.

That'll be great. I think it looks so much better than the factory support.

£78.99 a pair for the struts you have.... http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=searchProducts&searchTerm=339-9038

You have to drill a hole in the bonnet underskin and i used the insert where the boost soleniod (i think thats what it is) is located, near the brake servo. When the rain stops i will get some piccies.

I had some issues with the strut spinning at the lower attachment point, so i quickly manufactured this bracket so i could fit and check for clearences. I am getting a machined aluminium bracket made soon to replace this.

pug 406 uses them, are you sure you couldn't salvage some from one of them? they are pretty common down the scrappers

You screw the ball straight into the threaded nut welded to the inner wing if you have one with a 5mm thread , i never did find what make and model of car the one i had was from :headvswal .

If not take a normal 8mm threaded one to a friendly engineer and for a couple of beer tokens they would turn it down on a lathe and re-thread to 5mm , saves having to drill and fit a 8mm Rivnut , piece of pi55 :clap:

As for the strut we used tailgate struts of a early Renault Megane hatchback as they weren,t to long and not too strong , bearing in mind the light weight of the zed bonnet. HTH
