Fly-drive

Girlfriend and I are thinking about doing a fly-drive holiday this year. We were looking at doing Los Angeles for 5 days then onto Las Vegas for 4 days then onto San Fransico for another 5 days.

Has anyone done this type of holiday before or have any suggestions?

My first time state side was last year to florida which I really enjoyed so hoping this would be just as good.

Cheers,

Ant

Just go for it, yes I`ve done a lot of travelling and had 8 months out once! just me and the girlfriend travelled round the world! god how i miss it, i wont go into full detail, but the last few months were spend around California, we picked a Cavalier up from Lax and drove Sandiago, palm springs, all the national parks, Vegas, Yosemite, all over and ended up in Sanfran, absolultey Awesome!!, we then went to Vancouver and picked a Convertable Sebring and drove over the rockies into Calgary and then New york!!! Just do it dude,

Save as much as you can for the hire car it makes it so much more enjoyable when you have a nice set of wheels!!

i go to palm springs most years have got friends there i fly to LA then drive to palm sp;rings and usually go to vegas or san fransisco ,this year we went to vegas again all i say is take your own sat nav as they charge as much to hire as you can buy one ..

Well we went and booked it this morning

Cant't wait now. Looking to see more of the states in the future taking more time off to see alot more of the country. What do you both recommend when in California and Vegas apart from the obvious?

Looking forward to the long 570 mile drive from Vegas to San Fransico:wacko:

I know what you mean about the hire car Daz, I've been telling the girlfriend that we will be upgrading the car, got to have a decent hire car as we will be spending some time in it lol.

Cheers for the replys guys.

Many many times. Quite fortunate in the fact that I've travelled all over the world. Within the USA, I've visited 14 states. Another 2 when I head back in a few weeks. I always do a fly-drive, but book separately.

The drive from LA to SF is far more picturesque, but driving through the desert (if you've never done it before) is incredible.

Book flights through dialaflight.com and car rental with Avis. Dial a flight are excellent and I've bought 10 trans atlantic flights via them and also a flight to South Africa. Find them excellent and they can select days with airlines that will either suit your dates or pockets. Very good prices and a great company to deal with. Avis are also the most competative. Also they have no hidden costs or any extras. You get CDW and all the other stuff that sometimes are optional or 'extra' with companies like Enterprise etc.

Buick discontinued that about 6 or 7 years ago I think. So I doubt he'll be getting one of those.

I'd say avoid ALL US SUVs. ALL of them. If you can imagine what driving a waterbed would be like, then that's what you'll get. I had a V8 Dodge Durango a few years ago and I had to take it back. The winding freeways of Southern California really were the car's bugbear. Horrible wallowy unsafe feeling, to the extreme.

Thats good, I hired one of them in 2004 when I went to San Francisco so thats about right.

We did look at dialaflight.com but in the end we booked it up with virgin which included car hire and I no doubt we will up grade.

I think when we do this next time we will do a bit more planning and will use dialaflight and book things up individually. But with my girlfriend being a teacher we are limited to when we can go.

Anyone know of any decent car shows or must do's in Vegas, Los Angeles and San Fransico? Did see one museum in Imperial Palace Hotel in Vegas and the Carroll Shelby museum at the Vegas motor speedway.

When are you going?

I go to a lot of the LAZ32 meets. :)

Got one in 2 weeks time. Having an ocean breakfast cruise through Orange county before meeting at Griffith park in Los Angeles. Already have 20+ Z32s going. Should be good. :)

Just don't hire a LeSabre, worst car I have ever driven FACT and I've driven an N reg Kia Pride.

I've just bought a Kia Pride for a daily driver & doing a quick tour of Europe in :D Cost nothing! I also bought a Kia Pride many moons ago as my first car ... can't fault them really :)

If you go to San Francisco, you must see Alcatraz

Yep that's on the list of things to do. Really looking forward to that as well.
