Engine builders quick question

Could you give me some advise on rebuilding my engine. Ive got it all stripped and need to work on the heads and block ready for new gaskets and reassemble. Will working the heads and block with 1500 wet and dry do the job until i have shiny surfaces to rebuild.

Or would it be better to take the heads to be skimmed and would i need to take all the valves out to do this.

Any help and advise would be good thanks

Marty

Skimmed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't even think about trying to deck your heads by rubbing them down with sand papar! You have no control over tolerances. Christ, it's only about £150 per pair to get them done, the price of 2 tanks of fuel!

Yeah ive just been reading a few posts over the internet about it

Yeah, might work on an old pig-iron A-series engine!

Might of been a lawnmower i was reading about :hammer:

Then why are you asking about sanding down the faces on your heads?

You can do it on the block to remove any old bits of gasket. Iron obviously being much harder and more dense. But you're better off with a scraper.

...you don't need to take the valves out to have the heads skimmed, but you may as well take them out and lap them back in. Infact that's essential.

If you are building it back in Lincoln theres a few decent places round here - best one is in Newark - Northern Road Engineering 01636 702544, or Lincoln theres LGS 01522 545189 or Nu-Line Engineering if they are still around.
