Easy folks,

My '95 Jap spec TT doesnt have a boost gauge, as is the case with series 4 and 5 models. Its no big deal in itself, but my car has been fitted with an induction kit, exhaust and chip - so i'm surprised that there is no boost controller. I would have thought that anyone going to the expense of fitting a new ECU would have also released a few more horses by winding up the boost. So, two main questions really:

Firstly, is it possible that the boost pressure has been tweaked even though there seems to be no way to adjust the boost

And secondly, can anyone recommend a small, digital boost controller? I've seen one on Driftworks website, but i'm not convinced its worth over £200. It would need to be able to display boost pressure tho, as i'd rather not have any gauges - just not that keen on 'em.

cheers

Yes, its quite possible that a previous owner has fited 'Boost jets'. Its a very popular way of increasing boost. They are essentially mig-welding tips inserted into the pipe that feeds the stock Boost solenoids, which restrict pressure the solenoid see's. This Tricks it into thinking your at a lower boost pressure than you really are so the wastegates dont open to a higher boost.

The Greddy Profec B Spec II is probably the most widely used and recommended EBC.

Right,

Here is a link to the aforementioned boost controller:

http://www.driftworks.com/shop/p662/Gizzmo-Electronic-Boost-Controller/product_info.html

The design is just about perfect - small, compact and unfussy.

Having looked a little more in detail, it doesn't seem there's a fantastic choice of low-end boost controllers about.

My friend offered me his BCU+ system, but having read reviews about em, I can see why he's givin it away..

If anyone has any experience of the Gizzmo IBC unit then i'd be interested to hear from you, or if your boost controller has ever played up/problems.

Cheers

Whilst we are on the subject, what's the real-term difference in boost delivery when using an EBC vs boost jets? I hear of spikes using the latter and a non-progressive wastegate opening with the former, what's the scoop?

One question I have wanted to know with a boost controller, can you turn the boost lower than what it would be if it was stock? i.e. To save fuel if you wanted turning it into a more economic boost setting? - it may sound silly but I have always wondered..

Whilst trying to find my Zed I test drove many different cars, in varying states of tune.

Of the ones I drove with boost controllers, I would say that yes - it is possible to turn the boost down below the manufacturer's level. On one car in particular it was very noticeable how little the turbo's were working when the boost was turned right down.

In city driving where stop-start progress is more common, then it would probably save you fuel - albeit very, very marginally. However, at constant speeds i.e on the motorway it wouldn't save any fuel. The turbos are hardly working and the engine speed determines how quickly the fuel is drawn into the engine.

If you seriously wanted to save fuel you would need to have a variety of fuel maps, with one drastically reducing the fuel injected. But my guess is, you'd hate it and turn it straight back up to full fat anyway.

On the subject of fuel consumption... My skyline had 170hp and did 30mpg, my zed has 300+hp and does 27mpg. To me thats effing brilliant. A small price to pay for lighting up the rear tires every time my right foot gets heavy!!

Good times..

charlie from surrey rolling road told me that the most reliable and accurate ebc they have experienced (which would be lots!) is the apexi avcr.

Looks impressive. Found one on the net for £333, so not overly expensive. Love the fact that you can modify the boost for each gear, would stop the rear tyres getting destroyed in first and second.

Thanks for the post...

Have you got this model fitted to your zed? If so, does in fit in one of the DIN compartments? Prefer the factory-fitted look...

not yet bud, but i very much intend to when i upgrade my boost. i know what you mean though about the factory fitted look, everything i do around the car has to look as oem as possible. my din slots have a 8" widescreen touch monitor fabricated into them for my carpc setup (which is an absolute nightmare to try and look oem) so i don't have room there but have been pondering on a location for some time. tbh this is where the greddy ebc jumps ahead as its more compact and i believe, fits nicely into the centre console digital clock cutout... though thats still no good for me as i've flushed that :bored:
