i am pretty sure ive read the answer to this before, but just need confirmation..

scenario; the car is sorn, therefore not insured/mot'd or taxed.

I plan to get car back on road soon, i know I cant get road tax without the mot and insurance.

my questions is this - if i get the car insured, can i drive it to the mot station, to get it mot'd? then obviously i would go get road tax.

from what i remember - i'm certain i read if u are driving direct to the MOT station you can? maybe I wrong? Would car have to be towed?

anyone who knows please let me know, not gona get car MOT'd right now so not urgent but just so i know for future.

thanks.

Get it insured first. You are then allowed to drive the car (directly) to an MOT station for a pre-booked appointment. If all goes well go and get it taxed.

You are allowed to drive to & from a testing station as long as the vehicle has been pre booked for a test.

Obviously it is illegal to drive it on the road knowing it has defects still, so is all your tyres are bald for example then you should still not be driving it!!

HTH :)

From what i got from the police direct when asking the same question,

As long as it's booked in at a mot station you (should) be covered to drive it to and from the staion but only for the test, i did try and get further clarification on the word should, but the lady i spoke to seemed unable to say, so maybe insurance would be best

just what i have heard when asking

.....so,...... What if you want to take it to have work for the MOT, can you drive it directly to the garage that is to do the work (again pre-booked in), but is not the same garage that will do the MOT?

Anyone? :D

As long as it's pre-booked then you are allowed to drive it to and from the MOT station (even if it fails).

I believe that you can also drive it to a pre-booked garage for MOT failure repair works.

Of course the vehicle would have to be fully insured to drive it.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

By law, you can drive to and from the testing station as long as you are insured and have a pre booked test to attend. The downside to this is that if it fails the MOT you cannot drive it back.

Why you need an MOT certificate

It is generally an offence to use on a public road, a vehicle of testable age that doesn’t have a current test certificate, except when:

•taking it to a test station for an MOT test booked in advance

•bringing it away from a test station after it has failed the MOT test, to a place of repair

•taking it to a place, by previous arrangement, where problems that caused the vehicle to fail its MOT test, can be repaired

•bringing it away from a place where the problems with the vehicle have been repaired

Even in the above circumstances you may still be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle if it doesn’t comply with various regulations affecting its construction and use. Your car insurance may also be invalid.

The police can ask to see an MOT certificate for a vehicle that needs to have one. They also have access to the computerised records of MOT test results and can tell if the MOT certificate for your vehicle has expired.

It is your responsibility as the vehicle owner to ensure that the due MOT test is carried out in time. You can use the peel off reminder sticker on the front of the certificate and put it in a place where you’ll be reminded of the expiry date. A place like the sun visor or the back of the tax disc holder facing inside the vehicle.

The penalty for driving a vehicle on the road with an expired MOT certificate is a fixed penalty notice from the police, currently £60, or a court fine up to a maximum of a £1,000.
