I went to the warehouse today to start on what was supposed to be a complete brake overhaul and some paint prep. It turns out that I have a bit of a larger problem with rust than I first thought..............

What do you think then, repairable? Or should I just break it and sell for parts?

I'm gutted as I had it on a RR in Feb and made 376bhp so I know the engine is good and having bought all kinds of bits and pieces an the last 18 months it could all have been a waste of time.:cursing:

Looked quite bad to me as the hole on the drivers side is about a foot long and there is no sill left at all to weld anything to. I'd be needing inner, outer and arch panels for both sides so is it an economical repair? I can't weld so I'd have to pay to have done but the paint I'm not so worried about as I've got someone thatw ould be able to help me out with that.

i can recommend a welders down here . trickett welders a trader on my local jap car club is highly recommended . can pass you the details if required

Thats quite bad IMO mate, whilst you can pick up outer skin repair panels now quite cheap money, there are actually 3 of them each side, the most inner one only available from nissan at around 200 big ones.

However a decent metalworker and welder could overcome that part perhaps.

Suggest lifting the rear bench seat and then the carpet to see how far in towards the middle of rear floor pan the rust has gone.

Let us know what you find.

I replaced all 3 panels on drivers side and 2 on pass side, doing it properly was quite a big job!

Mate,

I had the same prob with my jap spec on both sides, the guy i used replaced all 3 on each side and charged me £400 inc paint, the panels cost me £210, so it aint cheap to get it done

Chris

Christ that was cheap!! i paid more than that just for panels and other odds an sods to fit and 3 of which were cheap copies.

Labour was then on top of that..

Including returns.

Once all done and ground flat as possible, coat with bare metal primer then skim to finalise shape, finish with stone chip and /or paint colour whatever applicable.

Jeff TT

Oh forgot, helps if you have one of these....

Huh? That's dirt cheap! That's £300 labour for a job that takes about 2 days!

Si, the guy i used was in Wednesbury , Parkside Autos, 0121 5057577, i also forgot to mention he also fitted a repair panel for the rear wheel arch included in this price and also sprayed the bottom half of the rear bumper for free.

I cannot reccomend him highly enough, he has a true passion for his work and the colour match was perfect.

So, you guy,s in the Midlands know where to go now, infact i am going back to him soon to have my new rear spoiler fitted

Cheers for the info peeps, I'll investigate a little further before I decide whether to strip it for parts. Does anyone have a link to the repair panels? I can't seem to find them.

Jeff - seeing as you have done the exact same job before, roughly how much would I be looking at to get it back to the pre paint stage?

Cheerz.

Pricing individial corrossion repairs by photo`s is difficult, the most inoffensive level of corrosion can turn into a huge job once started, equally a big looking job can end up been an easy repair, inspection and an open mind once the job is started is required.

Having said that typical pre paint repair cost for two rear sills inside and out and of course subject to actual inspection £300+ vat to £400+ vat. the price artztogo got was does seem very good.

Cheers for that Jeff, I know it's difficult to quote by picture so it was just a rough idea to see if it would be economically viable for me to repair. I let you know if I want to send it your way, just a shame your a little way away.

The decision has been made, she will live again.:cool2: Hopefully be going in towards the end of next week to start having the work done which , I'm guessing, won't take too long.

Good to hear, IMO you made the right choice. :w00t:

Sorry to see this Al, it's the same as mine it's a bugger when you find it isn't it?! ;)

My bodyshop guy quoted £650 which included fitting the panels I've already got, paint and sorting the paint on my bonnet and drivers front wing. So a more than do-able job and well worth it.................... Hmmm that's reminded me, I must nip up and book Eliza in :cool2:

Had to do the same last year. But it does get worse unfortunately. You'll find bubbles on the rear wheel arch that are worse than they look then take the rear bumper off and find frilly lower arches and lower rear wings that are hidden that also need done - at least they dont need to be pretty since the bumper hides them. Then when you think you are almost there you will find bits at the front end of the sills and floor pan at the front of the footwell that also need looking at. There are lots of double skins and in the rear sills four separate layers to restore including the outer skin.

Oh and when you remove the rear bumper you find that the 3 metal stiffener bracket pieces that support the plastic bumper have also pretty much reverted to iron ore. You have to make those up yourself to get the bumper back on again so again what looks like a simple job to remove and refit the bumper also gets bigger.

Gook luck with it!
