I have been looking for a UK 300ZX for about 3 months now, and I haven't been able to find anything that's right for me, so I'm thinking about looking at imports instead.

Obviously my insurance will be more expensive, but if I can counter it with a cheap car, it should even out. After some research, my insurance will be around £2000-£2500, so I will be looking to spend £1000-£1500 on the car itself.

My question is, what kind of car will I be able to get with that kind of budget? Since there's no rules on how to price a 300ZX, it's hard to tell which ones are good and which ones are bad. As I say, I've only been looking for 3 months, so I need a bit of help!

You're likely to get a tatty to reasonable condition NA auto for that.

Always baffles me; people that are willing to spend up to £2,500 on a year's insurance, yet looking to spend £1k on the car itself. Beggar's belief.

Have you had quotes from classic car insurance yet? might be worth doing a search on here for insurance as the subject crops up from time to time, im insured on a classic policy for £300 a year full comp on my TT.

also, what is your ideal 300zx

Keep looking mate, the difference between UK and import cars, are minimal, apart from a few changes across the years. buy the best car you can afford in your price range, see a few, it soon becomes clear a good one and a bad one. there are still a few decent ones around, not many but a few.

any probs we are here to help

I'm 20, I can get really good quotes on UK cars, but the insurance on an import is about double.

I have tried classic insurance, but I think you have to do less than 5000 miles a year to qualify.

In terms of an "ideal" car, it would be a UK manual with no modifications. I have no preference on colour, wheels, or anything like that. I would like the mileage to be on the lower side of 100,000 miles, but if it's a bit over I wouldn't mind.

Mate i was 20 when i got my first 300zx. Only 21 now and im paying 650 fully comp.

Even the first zed was only 1k fully comp.

Have you been to admiral and elephant.

If you buy a 300zx tt at 1500 expect to spent alot more cash on it.

You would be best of going for an n/a to keep insurance down and also to get a better car for your money.

I've tried Admiral and Elephant, rubbish for me. Looking at £2000+ regardless of whether its UK/import.

Good luck with the hunting mate, but TBH don't expect much for the budget you've got.

These cars are cheap enough to buy now because there are alot of ropey rotten shitters to buy, but a decent one will still command reasonable money.

Really do your homework other wise I fear your £1000-1500 could be nothing but trouble.

And be aware they are not cheap to keep.

Sorry to sound so grim about it, but people really need to know that these are far from normal cars, parts and labour well above Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra rates.

Si, i was just saying buy my experience, was a difference of £350 at the time of difference. I know not much but still money better in your pocket i suppose.

I got my zed for £500 but needed a new turbo, new front bumper and I had to remove all the boy racer stuff. There was one near me for sale that needed some tlc and a new gearbox, that sold for £320. So if you dont mind getting your hands dirty you can find a good zed. Lucky for me I'am an old git and my insurance is £200.

Good luck hope you find the zed of your dreams.

What insurance company is everyone using as far as classic cover is concerned?

Had a Sierra XR4x4 a few years back (great car-turned to rust befor my very eyes) and i was paying £300 a yr to insure it. I had 5 points for driving without due care (who me?) and my skyline was costing me about £1200 quid a year to insure at the same time.

£1500 a year on insurance, and the thing that really took the piss, the sierra spanked the skyline big time performance wise, but then it was a second car doin less than 7500miles a yr.

Try em, very reasonable

wait till your hair starts to fade a bit . my tt is less to insure than my volvo . still aint worked this one out yet.
